Lady Gaga: Indonesian hardliners' latest victory

Lady Gaga's decision to cancel the Indonesian leg of her world tour due to threats by Muslim hardliners highlights how groups pushing a strict view of Islam are growing increasingly powerful, analysts say.

Home to the world's largest Muslim population, officially secular Indonesia is often touted by Western leaders as a beacon of moderate Islam and a model for the Muslim world -- as visiting US President Barack Obama did in 2010.

But a series of attacks on Christians, Muslim minorities and those deemed "enemies of Islam", combined with the apparent unwillingness of the government and courts to clamp down has sparked concerns over the rise of the hardliners.

In the case of pop diva Lady Gaga, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) had threatened to "burn the stage" if she brought her trademark leotards, racy choreography and support for gay rights to Indonesia.

Branding her the devil, they said they would mobilise 30,000 supporters to create "chaos" if she performed.

International Crisis Group analyst Sidney Jones said groups such as the FPI were becoming increasingly confident in their push to get Islamic laws accepted by the mainstream, thanks to a series of successful campaigns.

"What's clear is that there wouldn't have been a thought of cancelling the concert if these groups hadn't mobilised," she told AFP. "It shows the power they have to affect the statements and policy of police."

"Incident after incident, they organise a protest and see that pulling a group of people together for the television cameras and pressing a particular agenda has worked," Jones said.

The impunity that hardliners often enjoy is due partly to the fear that officials have of taking them on, Ismail Hasani, programme manager at the Setara Institute for Democracy and Peace, told AFP.

"The police and courts have proved they cannot handle these issues fairly. They're often worried of a violent backlash if they punish hardliners."

"Hardliners often foster close relationships with local governments, and some police even use them to help enforce the law through violent means."

He identified the main problem as "not really related to the law or religion, but political power".

The pressure that led the police to deny Lady Gaga a permit to perform in Jakarta was just the latest example of authorities buckling under threats by the FPI and similar groups.

Earlier this month, police shut down events by Canadian author Irshad Manji, who supports gay rights in the Muslim world, under pressure from hardliners who attacked the author, injuring her and a colleague.

Also this month, hardliners wanting officials to shut down a Protestant church on the outskirts of Jakarta threw bags of urine and pelted rocks at worshippers preparing to hold a service.

In one of the most shocking episodes, a mob of more than 1,000 people in western Java last year beat to death three leaders from the Ahmadiyah Muslim minority sect while police looked on, smoking cigarettes.

Such incidents have usually resulted in hardliners receiving either no sanction at all or lenient punishments.

The FPI, which sees its role as an enforcer of morals and Islamic law, accompanies police in some parts of the country on violent raids on bars and brothels, particularly during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

The group's Jakarta chairman Habib Salim Alatas described the relationship with police as like a marriage.

"When we want to raid places of sin and cults, the police side with us to stop them," Alatas said.

Hardliners gained more traction in 2008, when the government issued a decree restricting the activities of the Ahmadiyah sect.

The decree came amid mass protests and a week after the FPI stormed a pro-Ahmadiyah rally in the capital, injuring dozens.

The same year, the government passed an anti-pornography law that hardliners had long pushed for through televised rallies and an attack on the office of Indonesian Playboy magazine in 2006 just after it opened.

While the FPI is the most visibly violent group, many others are active behind the scenes, said Jones, from the International Crisis group, singling out Hizb ut-Tahrir and the Islamic People's Forum (FUI).

Gauging how much support the hardliners enjoy among Indonesia's 240 million people -- 90 percent of whom identify themselves as Muslim -- is hard to say.

One recent survey by the Jakarta-based Centre for the Study of Religion and Culture among 1,500 Muslims, showed 74 percent were opposed entertainers wearing "minimal clothing" on stage.

In a separate survey by the Indonesian Survey Circle of 1,200 Muslims aged 15 to 25, 99 percent said they opposed homosexuality.

But among the 50,000 people who bought tickets to see Lady Gaga in Jakarta, some used Twitter to express their feelings.

"Really devastated and sad that extremist people ruined what could of been an amazing 2 hour night," wrote one fan.

Taking Paid Online Surveys Quickly | Online Business Article Directory

?

When you are taking paid online surveys, it is a good idea to take them as quickly as you can. Do not take your time. Do not think too long about each one of your answers. You just need to get through the questions as quickly as possible. Most surveys will come with an expected timeframe. They tell you how long it should take you to do the whole thing. You should use this as a guideline, but do not be afraid to spend even less time on the surveys. Whatever you do, make sure that it does not take longer than the expected time for you to do them.

The main reason why it is good to do this quickly is that you will make more money. Perhaps you are getting five dollars to do a survey. If you take a whole hour to do it, you are really only making five dollars an hour. This is below the standard minimum wage. If you can do it in twenty minutes, though, you can do three of them every hour. This increases your wage to fifteen dollars an hour. The faster that you work, the more valuable you will make the time that you spend.

It is also just good to do these quickly because that is often what the people who have created the surveys want you to do. They need to have your gut reactions. The first things that you think of are the things that are important to them. This can make their research much more accurate. If you spend a long time on each one, they may actually find that the work that you have done is not as valuable to them as it would have been if you would have spent half the amount of time doing the work.

For example, perhaps you will be taking a survey about the first things that you notice when you go into a new business. A company could use this information so that they can create a good first impression for anyone who comes into the building. However, you cannot stop and think about the important features. They need to know the first things that you think of, the first things that come to mind. These answers will reflect the first things that you would actually notice, even if those things do not seem like they are very important. This information will be more useful to the company than if you stopped and thought about your answers because your answers would then not be nearly so true.

You should go into every survey that you take with this mindset. Remember that speed is important. Remember that you will be giving people better answers when you work quickly, and that you will also be earning more money. This is the end goal of taking all of these surveys in the first place. This will help you to have a lot of success. You will provide needed assistance to companies and businesses, and they will pay you fairly for your work. As long as you have this mindset when you begin, it will not be difficult to keep it for as long as you are working. You should mentally prepare yourself for the task that is at hand before you begin.

What Beginning Gear Does the Newly Certified Diver Really Want ...

The Starting Diving Wetsuit Gear that the Inexperienced Diver Needs!

Ocean draws heat energy from your body TWENTY FIVE TIMES quicker than air does. Many of us do not realize that almost half of a individual?s warming loss occurs right out of the top of the head.

Covering your brain with a diving hood will increase heating and comfortability and expand your journeys into the deep blue a great bit longer.

Even in warm water, you may not need a scuba head cover for the first couple of days of a trip, but on following days, the water seems colder because you have lost core heat. Comparable to air temperature, water environment throughout the world are different in winter than they are in summer months. Gals tend to get chillier a lot quicker than males. This is seeing that ladies tend to have more surface area (curves) then men do. If a couple is traveling together it will almost always make more sense for the woman to have a warmer scuba hood than a man would to the same destination at the same time of year.

Could you be a water enthusiast and want to investigate what dwells on the bottom in the deep blue ocean? Right now there is a great deal to view in this mind-boggling waterworld. It is fully the fantastic world of scuba diving, snorkel diving, freediving, swimming. . . any water-sports activity. In order to conduct this pastime successfully.

Are you a H2O lover and want to explore what dwells on the bottom in the deep blue sea? There is plenty to check out in this breathtaking waterworld.

It is truly, you must have the knowledge, and choose the right fitting scuba wetsuit, basically because a wetsuit is possibly the most invaluable component of scuba diving equipment in your scuba toolbox.

Smiley face

Snorkeling wetsuits by their feature, are used to preserve heat alongside your body even when you?re in 10 freeze degrees beneath the H2O. It assists as your coverage from cold and makes you experience comfortable. It has gotten its identity even though it makes you truly feel heat. Your scuba wetsuit contains water in the middle of the wetsuit and your skin ( and warms that liquid up to 98 degrees) so that you can enjoyably feel warm, and sustain that warmth.

For more complete look at this, please read on the K2 blog, ? Why Are You Cold in Your Wetsuit??

Yet another tip is to consider a scuba wetsuit that is flexible. Fullsuit fashioned wetsuits have trunk area insulation and decrease flushing (as mentioned above) making them significantly better for chilly water; and kicks butt over farmer John style wetsuits.

Telling the full-blown specifics, in today?s market-farmer John style wetsuits are used as rental outfits at local dive shops. This is because it is ?one-size-fits-all? opportunity for dive shop managers to fit their trainees into wetsuits for cold water scuba diving.

Wouldn?t you love it if you did not have to worry about anything but inhaling and exhaling on your dive and snapping gorgeous photos with your underwater camera; and appreciating the display of the reefs and fish?

Comfortably, there are ?all kinds of formulae that ?determine ?exactly how many pounds a person ?should really? make full use of, these update with different kinds of exposure protection.

Indeed, a handful of them are even really quite accurate. But similar to a recipe, these might as well be managed as simple tips; starting pointers.

Regardless, your individual gear choices, you may be proficiently adjusted for amateur scuba diving if, with an evacuated BCD and totally full lungs, you float at eye level in the water column; you should really sink when you breathe out.

Straightforward as that! I would say the thing to do typically write down the figure of weight you will want with some other gear configurations (eg, tropical or drysuit) in your logbook, so you will always remember that you keep diving in numerous spots.

Certainly, be sure to review the many websites accessible out there, and kindly keep in mind to wear rash guard when you are out in the direct sun light. We also just incorporated new types of beach cover ups, so please come take a look! Mosey on over to the Tribe K2 at 866-523-4846. Mahindra & Mahindra Struggling to Push ... - China Car Times

The below Reuters report is largely correct, aside from Ssangyong?s placement as a high end brand. Ssangyong to Chinese consumers was never really a high end brand, it was a quirky SUV maker with noisy diesel engines and expensive spare parts. The best selling Ssangyong was the Kyron and the later Actyon, but once the novelty of having an SUV that looked like a shark crossed with a sports coupe wore off, Ssangyong?s Chinese sales shrivelled, and then came the SAIC pull out, followed by a lack of new models. In fact, the Actyon sells for just 160,000RMB to 230,000RMB ? hardly high end considering the most basic Jeep Compass sells for 220,000RMB and rising.

Mahindra & Mahindra is finding it tough to exorcise the ghosts of failed Chinese ownership at its South Korean car unit Ssangyong as it looks to push the brand into China?s auto market, the world?s largest.

At the same time, the Indian car, tractor and truck maker, the core part of the $14.4 billion diversified Mahindra Group, will take its own rugged sport utility vehicles (SUVs) elsewhere, to emerging markets such as Brazil and South Africa ? though it is developing engines to be used across both brands.

Mahindra?s muscular jeeps have for decades been a favourite in India?s rural hinterland, and its tractors work fields from Arizona to Zimbabwe. Cracking the Chinese market with Ssangyong would mark the next frontier for a company that has used booming domestic growth to fuel its global ambitions.

?China is a high priority for Ssangyong, but not for Mahindra,? said Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra?s automotive and farm equipment sectors and chairman of Ssangyong, which the Indian company bought for $460 million in March last year.

Ssangyong Motor Co, which trails far behind Korean rivals Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors but is popular in Russia, was close to bankruptcy under its Chinese owners SAIC Motor Corp when Mahindra stepped in to buy a 70 percent stake.

The Indian firm started importing Ssangyong cars into China late last year, but has had ?limited success? in a market that is slowing and which regards Ssangyong as a premium brand, Goenka said in an interview at Mahindra?s headquarters in central Mumbai.

?An important hurdle we faced was the ?ghost of the past? at Ssangyong. They were clearly badly bitten by SAIC.?

?It?s said that SAIC did not do justice to Ssangyong. And there?s an apprehension, a feeling, a concern that we may be a repeat of the same. To remove that concern has taken time. And I can?t say it?s gone 100 percent,? he added. ?That has been a little harder than we thought.

Goenka declined to say how many cars Ssangyong sold in China, but said the total lagged expectations. ?The ramp-up has not been as we?d expected,? he said. ?If Ssangyong was a very strong brand in China, then clearly the market slowdown would not have affected us as it has.?

?There is an action plan that includes brand building and pricing and what kind of product tinkering we do; whether there is a specific requirement of product the Chinese customer would want,? he said.

The Ssangyong project is a career-defining initiative for Goenka, who spent 14 years at General Motors before joining Mahindra almost two decades ago.

Ssangyong, which makes the Korando and Rexton SUVs and the Chairman luxury marque, sold 114,000 vehicles in the year to end-March, exporting two-thirds of its production. Goenka expects sales to increase to 125,000 cars this year, and has set a target of 160,000 for 2013.

He said plant capacity could probably be increased to 180,000-200,000 vehicles at minimal extra cost. ?It will take us to 2014 until we sweat the assets fully. That?s very important,? he said, noting depreciation as a part of Ssangyong?s revenue was above the industry norm as the assets are under-utilised.

Ssangyong made a loss of around $80 million in 2011, three times bigger than its 2010 loss, but it was offset by unlocking working capital tied up in the company.

?As of now we have no plans (to take Mahindra to China),? said Goenka. ?We are entering China through Ssangyong. Once that is successful, then we will evaluate whether it makes sense to bring Mahindra products there.

?Once the volume picks up, and we reach a certain economic level, then we will look at manufacturing in China,? he said, adding that all new vehicle platforms will be shared by Ssangyong and Mahindra cars. ?Together we are developing next-generation transmissions, which is a fairly expensive program that neither Mahindra nor Ssangyong could justify doing on their own.?

Afraid of needles? Futuristic syringe doesn?t need them

7 hrs.

Getting a shot may soon be nearly painless, according to researchers developing a new type of syringe.

The device is able to blast a high-pressure jet of medicine at the speed of sound through a person?s skin without the aid of a hypodermic needle.?

The jet is about the same diameter as a mosquito?s proboscis, Ian Hunter, a mechanical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explains in the video below.?

?As many of you know, you don?t feel when the mosquito inserts its proboscis into your skin because it?s so very narrow,? he said.

While needle-less syringes have been around for a few years, the prototype device Hunter and his colleagues are developing can be fine-tuned to control the depth and speed of drug delivery.

For example, a shot may start with a super high-pressure blast to penetrate the skin, but then scaled back to deliver the drug in a slower stream.

This variable adjustment of the jet may ring familiar to fans of Star Trek, where medical officers are constantly fiddling?with drugs and doses.

This is all possible thanks to a mechanism called a Lorentz-force actuator that MIT describes in a news release as:

A small, powerful magnet surrounded by a coil of wire that?s attached to a piston inside a drug ampoule. When current is applied, it interacts with the magnetic field to produce a force that pushes the piston forward, ejecting the drug at very high pressure and velocity. ? The speed of the coil and the velocity imparted to the drug can be controlled by the amount of current applied.

The device can be programmed for different types of skin ? a baby getting the whooping cough vaccine at the doctor?s office, for example, has softer skin than parents and grandparents who might also need the shot.

According to Hunter, the device can be used for delivery of drugs right through the eye into the retina as well as the inner ear.?

The device can also be programmed to vibrate, which is able to make powdered drugs behave as if they were a liquid, which means it can inject powdered vaccines in parts of the world that lack refrigeration.

Why Consider A Commercial Loan Refinance?

You may have heard other lenders and there offering of low interest rates, or your loan could be tied up with a high interest rate. In such cases it might be possible to refinance loan agreements with another lender or even renegotiate your loan terms with your existing lender.

Check out Winston Rowe & Associates free commercial real estate investor resources at: http://www.winstonrowe.com/Free_Real_Estate_Resources.html

Extend The Loan Term:

Increasing the amortization period from 20 to 25 years, can have a significant impact on the repayment amount. Your overall interest payments would be higher, buy your cash flow would be made healthier by reducing your regular payments. In most cases, business that are having problems making payments can be helped by improving capital in this way.

Cash Out:

If you?re lucky and have equity within the business pulling out some cash could free up some spending capital. This can offer at least two major benefits, namely enabling you to invest the capital at a good rate of interest or provide you with a cash sum to enable expansion.

Consolidate Multiple Loans On The Property:

You may have a few loans that can be combined into better terms. Many business owners that refinance commercial loans through combing loans in this way can save a great deal in their monthly repayments, particularly useful in a business that relies in a strong cash flow situation.

In your reasoning for refinancing or modification of the loan, there needs to be benefits to you. Otherwise there is no logic in doing so. This benefit can be related to improved cash flow, tax benefits or expansion through the acquisition of capital assets such as equipment, increased office space or improved manufacturing facilities.
Now let's consider 'How' you are going to refinance your loan:

You can either refinance your loan with your existing lender or with an alternative, like Winston Rowe & Associates. If you cannot refinance your loan you might do a commercial loan modification. Many business owners tend to change their lenders for a better deal: a lower interest rate, longer period, reduced debt amount, or eliminate late payments. A clean loan modification, can and will generate positive results for you as well.

Eurozone warned 'severe recession' looming

A woman walks past a closed-down travel agency plastered with concert posters in Madrid Monday May 21, 2012. Spain's economy minister de Guindos said the Spanish economy, which has contracted by 0.3 percent in each of the past two quarters, will shrink by about the same amount in the second quarter of 2012. The forecast is for it to decline 1.7 percent for the year. Unemployment stands at a staggering 24.4 percent, and exceeds 50 percent for people under age 25.(AP Photo/Paul White)

(AP) ? The 17-country eurozone risks falling into a "severe recession," the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned on Tuesday, as it called on governments and Europe's central bank to act quickly to keep the slowdown from dragging down the global economy.

OECD Chief Economist Pier Carlo Padoan warned the eurozone economy could contract by as much as 2 percent this year, a figure that the Paris-based organization had laid out as its worst-case scenario in November.

In its twice-yearly global economic outlook, the OECD ? which monitors economic trends for the world's most developed economies ? said its average forecast was for the eurozone economy to shrink 0.1 percent this year and grow a mere 0.9 percent in 2013.

"Today we see the situation in the euro area close to the possible downside scenario" in the OECD's November report, "which if materializing could lead to a severe recession in the euro area and with spillovers in the rest of the world," Padoan told reporters before the report's release.

The report forecasts Europe falling further behind other countries, particularly the United States, whose economy is expected to grow 2.4 percent this year and 2.6 percent next.

"There is now a diverging trend between the euro area and the U.S., where the U.S. is picking up more strongly while the euro area is lagging behind," Padoan said.

Europe itself is increasingly split between a wealthier north continuing to grow and a southern rim that is sliding deeper into recession, the OECD figures show.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, will accelerate to 2 percent growth next year after 1.2 percent growth in 2012, while France, the eurozone's second-largest economy, will expand 1.2 percent next year after 0.6 percent growth this year, the OECD said.

Italy's economy, by contrast, will shrink 1.7 percent this year and 0.4 percent in 2013, the OECD forecast. Spain is also set to remain mired in recession, with contraction of 1.6 percent this year and 0.8 percent next.

Padoan called on eurozone leaders to adopt a "growth compact" to promote growth even while reducing deficits. French President Francois Hollande has made securing such a pact the focus of his European diplomacy in the first weeks of his administration.

So-called eurobonds ? debt issued jointly by countries in the currency bloc ? could be used to recapitalize banks, Padoan said. He also reiterated his call of six months ago for the ECB to do more to stem Europe's crisis.

The ECB has an "essential" role to play in solving Europe's crisis, Padoan said, both by using its balance sheet firepower to shore up banks and by lowering interest rates. The ECB should also consider renewing the "unconventional measures" it used last year such as buying up government bonds, "if there is need to cope with contagion problems," Padoan said.

Asian economies will also do better than Europe, the OECD predicted. Japan is forecast to grow 2 percent this year and slow down to 1.5 percent in 2013, while China is expected to accelerate from 8.2 percent to 9.3 percent.

Despite their growth downgrades for Europe, the OECD's figures are more optimistic than those of the International Monetary Fund. Last month the IMF predicted Europe's economy would shrink 0.3 percent this year, with the U.S. expanding 2.1 percent.

Malawi's president vows to repeal gay ban

(AP) ? President Joyce Banda declared Friday she wants to repeal Malawi's laws against homosexual acts, going against a trend in Africa in which gays are being increasingly singled out for prosecution.

Banda, who assumed the presidency in April when her predecessor died, made the announcement in her first state of the nation address.

"Indecency and unnatural acts laws shall be repealed," she said. But repealing a law requires a parliamentary vote, and it is unclear how much political support Banda would have for sweeping changes in this impoverished and conservative nation in southern Africa.

Malawi had faced international condemnation for the conviction and 14-year prison sentences given in 2010 to two men who were arrested after celebrating their engagement and were charged with unnatural acts and gross indecency.

Then President Bingu wa Mutharika pardoned the couple on "humanitarian grounds only" while insisting they had "committed a crime against our culture, against our religion, and against our laws."

Mutharika died in office in April. Banda, who was vice president, stepped in to serve out his term which ends in 2014.

Elsewhere in her speech, Banda said her government wants to normalize relations with "our traditional development partners who were uncomfortable with our bad laws."

Banda's speech was applauded by human rights activists, but they cautioned getting the necessary backing from parliament won't be easy.

"The issue of homosexuality has been a contentious issue," said human rights activist Undule Mwakasungula. "Definitely it will raise controversy in parliament."

In South Africa, the only African country with laws protecting gay rights, activist Mark Heywood said Banda would have international support.

"I hope that she is persuasive enough in her own country," Heywood said.

South Africa's 1996 constitution bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. With the constitution's backing, activists have gone to court to ensure laws such as one banning sodomy were overturned. Gays have had the right to marry since 2006 but face discrimination and sometimes violence in South Africa.

"It's really important for other African countries other than South Africa to move in this direction," Heywood said of Banda's move. "Symbolically, I think it is very important for Africa."

In Uganda, lawmaker David Bahati introduced a bill in 2009 that proposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts. The bill drew a firestorm of international condemnation and has yet to become law. Homosexuality is already illegal in Uganda. After the bill was introduced, a Ugandan tabloid published a list of what it called Uganda's "top homos," including the name of a gay activist who was later killed in what some suspect was a hate crime.

Last year, Nigeria's Senate voted in favor of a bill that would criminalize gay marriage, gay advocacy groups and same-sex public displays of affection. Under a newly added portion of the bill, those found guilty of organizing, operating or supporting gay clubs, organizations and meetings could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

Last month, an anti-gay group in Liberia distributed fliers with a hit list of people who support gay rights. Liberian lawmakers earlier in the year introduced two pieces of legislation that would make homosexuality punishable by possible jail time. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who won the Nobel Peace Prize this year, has vowed to preserve an existing law that makes "voluntary sodomy" a crime.

Also Friday, Banda said in her state of the nation address that she was appointing a commission of inquiry to look into when and how her predecessor Mutharika died, what medical attention he received and the "activities of various individuals during and in managing the transition."

After Mutharika died April 5, the government took two days to confirm his death and to allow Banda to step in. The delay had led to speculation that Banda's rivals were trying to prevent her from becoming president, even though the constitution decrees the vice president should take over.

CSN: Konerko hit in face? |? White Sox top Cubs

May 18, 2012, 5:38 pm

JJ STANKEVITZ
csnchicago.png

The White Sox may have pulled out a 3-2 win over the Cubs Friday at Wrigley Field, but the loss suffered in the third inning may loom larger.

A 2-2 splitter from Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija ran inside on Paul Konerko, hitting him in the face and leaving the White Sox captain crumpled in a heap at home plate for a few scary moments. The 36-year-old first baseman got up and had to be escorted off the field with a towel pinned to his face, as he suffered a small cut above his left eye thanks to the 85 mile per hour pitch.

"You never want to see a guy get hurt, period. To have a ball around someone?s head is a scary situation," catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "It?s something you don?t want to see."

Manager Robin Ventura said he didn't have an update on Konerko's status, which was announced as just a laceration and swelling, although he was set to undergo further tests. Pierzynski saw Konerko before he left the park, though, and offered somewhat encouraging news.

"His eye was pretty swelled up, but he was cognizant and didn?t say he was dizzy or anything," Pierzynski said. "I?ve seen him get hit before and get up and go to first. It was a little scary when he didn?t get right up. He seemed fine and we?ll see how he feels tomorrow."

Konerko homered in his previous at-bat, so when Samardzija's offering sailed inside, naturally there were calls for blood from the White Sox fans in attendance at Wrigley Field. The Sox, however, weren't playing that game -- at least, so they say.

Philip Humber threw a fastball up and behind Bryan LaHair to lead off the bottom of the fourth, a pitch Humber and Ventura insist just got away from the White Sox starter. But home plate umpire Tim Timmons had other ideas and issued a warning to both benches.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum didn't label the pitch as retaliatory, but if it was, he thought the Sox could have done a better and safer job of sending the message.

?Are you expecting retaliation of somebody throwing at somebody else?s head? No," Sveum said. "Unfortunately, you?re not really expecting any retaliation after somebody gets hit by a split-finger fastball. We?re obviously not trying to hit Paul with any kind of pitch like that.

"But if there?s retaliation, you?d sure appreciate if the guy throws a little bit lower than he did. Unfortunately, you know, he didn?t."

Sveum, essentially, just hoped the pitch got away from Humber and that it wasn't thrown in response to Konerko's beaning. Ventura tried to add some credence to that thought after the game.

"If we wanted to do anything, we would have hit him," Ventura said, referring to Samardzija, who led off the bottom of the third. "It's just baseball, you just keep going."

"That one just got away from me," added Humber. "It's just one of those things that happens during the game."

Pierzynski and Samardzija chatted before the Cubs pitcher came up to hit in the third, during which Samardzija apologized. From the sound of it, Pierzynski and his teammates knew the beaning wasn't intentional.

"He was asking if Paul was ok and that was it," Pierzynski said. "It was an offspeed pitch and we knew it wasn?t intentional and [Samardzija] just said to tell Paul he was sorry, I didn?t mean to do it. I was like yeah, we know. It was no big deal."

But in these crosstown contests, plenty of things can be blown out of proportion. Luckily for Gordon Beckham, most of the vitriol was directed at the umpiring crew when he, for all intents and purposes, tackled David DeJesus off the second-base bag, leading to a questionable out call that ultimately got Sveum ejected for the first time in his managerial career.

"I couldn't stop. I tried to get there and realized right when I lunged out that I was going to be late and ended up basically tackling him," Beckham said. "Didn't mean to do it, obviously."

For the first time in a little while, Friday's game felt like a classic crosstown matchup. The beaning of Konerko, the play at second, Samardzija's game-tying single, Beckham's go-ahead home run and, of course, Kerry Wood's final career pitch contributed to a lively atmosphere after questions about the series going stale were numerous this week.

"I think that was more than the typical game, it seemed like there was a lot of stuff going on," Beckham said. "Both teams played really hard, so you gotta be proud about that. We were fortunate enough to come out on top."

Fortunate is a good way to put it. The Sox are hoping Konerko, arguably the most irreplaceable player on the roster, won't miss much time. Without Konerko, the Sox may be fortunate to come away with wins.

Someone else who's hoping Konerko is back soon is his golfing buddy, who happens to be the manager on the other side of town.

"I hope Paul?s all right, because he?s a friend of mine," Sveum said. "I play with golf with him. Hopefully, it?s no big deal.?

Blogs are being increasingly used by corporate houses to post their current and upcoming event schedules, online event registration and ticketing links, and photos and videos of earlier event(s). Blogs provide a highly engaging atmosphere for both the readers and the blogger. This fact has not escaped the attention of the educational institutions who seek to build up an interactive and engaging environment for enhanced communication. For example, I remember my professor telling me once that he wanted to have "blog-like" discussions in the college classroom, by implementing a discussion forum. At that time, my professor could not even imagine using blogs in live class. However, nowadays, lots of colleges worldwide have introduced or started thinking of introducing blogs in classrooms.

Blogs can be used to post a lot of things such as texts, images, videos and webiste links such as your online class registration link, and so on.

The essential benefits of using blogs in college classrooms are as follows:

Collect Online Assignments

Instead of collecting completed assignments from students individually, why not ask students to submit assignments on their personal blogs. It is far easy and convenient to access an online blog to check what they have written. Moreover, fellow classmates may also have viewing access for the assignment posted online.

Read Other's Blogs

Encourage students to read blogs of their fellow classmates. This will help the students view what others post regarding a specific lesson. Besides, looking at other blogs may assist them in collaborative work, for example, solving a complex problem or guide them to finish a project on time.

Encourage Interaction

Blogs are a great way to cultivate interaction and engagement between students. Sharing their personal learning experiences as well as sorting out critical problems via a consistent platform is a vital feature of writing blogs. College goers can at anytime comment on their fellow classmates' blog posts and seek feedback. Furthermore, you can instantly help a student with a solution (by writing on his/her blog) when the person seems to be facing difficulties undertaking a lesson.

Share Knowledge

Whenever you find certain interesting and useful articles or news, try to post the same on your blog. It will help the college students' access the same while studying and help in the process of broadening up their knowledge base within a short span of time. ?

Panasonic TC-P60ST50

Panasonic plasma HDTVs have a well-deserved reputation for producing very dark black levels, and the TC-P55ST50 continues that trend. The 55-inch plasma panel not only delivers inky blacks, it's out of the box color accuracy is outstanding too. ?At $1,699.99 (list) it's not exactly a steal, but it's not quite as expensive as our reigning Editors' Choice plasma, last year's Samsung PN51D8000 ($2,299.99, 4 stars). The TC-P55ST50 is 3D ready, but it doesn't include glasses, which means you'll have to shell out upwards of $300 for active shutter 3D glasses for a family of four. You'll also pay more to run this set, since like many plasmas, it's not particularly energy efficient.

Editors' Note: This review is based on tests performed on the?Panasonic TC-P55ST50, the 55-inch model in the same series. Besides the screen size difference, the?$1,399.99?50-inch TC-P50ST50 is identical in features, and while we didn't perform lab tests on this specific model, we expect similar performance.

Design and Features
With the TC-P55ST50 Panasonic moves away from the glossy black bezel design used on earlier models, including the?Panasonic P50GT30 ($1,199.99, 3.5 stars) we reviewed last year. This time around the panel is framed by dark gray bezels with a slice of clear trim around the outer edge. A silver brushed aluminum base complements the cabinet and gives the set a touch of elegance. The stand does a fine job of supporting the 61-pound cabinet, but it doesn't swivel.

Behind the right-hand bezel are power, channel, and volume controls and an input select button that doubles as a menu button when you press and hold it. The rear of the cabinet holds all of the I/O connections; three HDMI ports, two USB ports, and an SD card slot are vertically mounted and face left for easy access. Ethernet, TV/antenna, and digital audio out connections sit horizontally under a recessed space notched into the back panel. Here you'll also find a proprietary mini-component video input port for use with the included component dongle. It's odd that Panasonic only equips this model with three HDMI ports considering most HDTVs have four, and in the case of the Sharp Elite Pro-60X5FD ($5,999, 4 stars), five.

The 9-inch remote has 43 buttons and a four-way directional rocker with an Enter button. The main keys have red backlighting that makes them easy to identify in a dark room. The three main keys (Menu, Internet, and Viera Tools) are situated above the rocker assembly, while the number keys and player controls are at the bottom of the remote along with a Help key that launches a built-in user manual.

There's also a 3D button that lets you view 2D content in a simulated 3D mode. As I found with the Sharp Elite Pro-60X5FD, converted 3D picture quality isn't up to snuff compared with true made-for-3D image quality. You don't get the depth and clarity that true 3D offers, and there's a good deal of crosstalk. As with the P50GT30, the P55ST50 does not include active shutter 3D glasses, so be prepared to part with an additional $80 per pair.

Image settings include five preset picture modes (Standard, Cinema, Custom, Vivid, Game) and your basics: Brightness, Contrast, Color, Tint, Sharpness, and Color Temperature. Panasonic's Pro settings allow you to adjust color space and set high and low white balance for reds, greens, and blues. Other Pro settings include panel brightness and gamma adjustment.

The Audio setting menu offers Bass, Treble, Balance, and Surround settings, as well as a volume leveler to keep those pesky commercials from blasting you out of your seat. The TC-P55ST50's 8-Train speaker system, consisting of eight mini domes and a slim but powerful subwoofer, provides a solid wall of sound with a good amount of bass, but the surround effect sounds thin.

Panasonic's selection of Web apps is top notch; streaming movie channels include Vudu, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant video, and CinemaNow, and you get Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and YouTube. Internet Sports channels include MLB, MLS, NBA, NHL, and Fox Sports. The Viera Market Connect menu offers plenty of free services as well as pay-for apps like Uno, Apple Muncher, and Let's Golf 2. And, there's a built-in Web browser.

Performance
I tested the TC-P55ST50 using images from the DisplayMate suite of HDTV diagnostic tests, SpectraCal's CalMAN software, and a CS-200 Chroma Meter. After a basic calibration the panel produced a nice dark black level reading of 0.02 cd/m2, but it could only manage a peak brightness of 85.45 cd/m2, which is tad darker than the P50GT30 (88.58 cd/m2) and quite dim compared with the Samsung PN51D8000 (244.92 cd/m2).

Out-of-the-box color accuracy was excellent. The panel practically hit the CIE (International Commission On Illumination) chromaticity coordinates for red, green, and blue on the nose, as shown in the CalMAN-generated diagram below. More importantly, the P55ST50 delivers an excellent picture; colors popped from the solid black background in the Seasonal Forests chapter of the BBC's?Planet Earth?Blu-ray, and shadow detail was outstanding in the darker Ocean Deep chapter. What's more, there was no evidence of the fringing effect that plagued the P50GT30. Off angle viewing was typical of a good plasma panel. There was no loss of luminance from an extreme side angle and colors remained bright and true.

3D performance was good, but not on a par with our Editors' Choice high-end LCD, the Sharp Elite Pro. I noticed some crosstalk while watching clips from IMAX?Under The Sea 3D, but the artifacts were minor and didn't detract from the overall experience. Panasonic's glasses are lighter than most active shutter glasses, but aren't as comfortable as today's passive glasses, like the six pairs that come with the Editors' Choice Vizio M3D550KD ($1,429.99, 4 stars).

Plasma HDTVs aren't known for energy efficiency, and the P55ST50 is no exception. With Power Saving mode disabled, the set used 305 watts during my testing; that number dropped to 245 watts with it enabled. The P50GT30 averaged 225 watts, while the Samsung PN51D8000 used 105 watts in Standard mode. If energy efficiency is a deal breaker, consider an LED-backlit LCD model like the LG 55LM6700 ($2,299.99, 4 stars), which only consumed 67 watts.

Conclusion
The Panasonic P55ST50 is a tastefully designed 55-inch plasma HDTV that delivers very accurate colors, deep dark blacks, and wide off-angle viewing. Its $1,700 price tag is not unreasonable considering its performance, but you'll end up spending around $2000 if you need four pairs of 3D glasses. You don't get the brightness and superior image quality of the Samsung PN51D8000, but you do get a slightly bigger screen and a much smaller price tag.

Facebook increases IPO range to raise $12.1 billion

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc increased the price range on its initial public offering an average of 14 percent to raise more than $12 billion, giving the world's No. 1 social network a valuation potentially exceeding $100 billion.

The company, founded eight years ago by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room, raised the target range to between $34 and $38 per share in response to strong demand, from $28 to $35, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday.

That would value Facebook at roughly $93 billion to $104 billion, rivaling the market capitalization of Internet powerhouses such as Amazon.com Inc, and exceeding that of Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc combined.

Facebook also extended the time frame for its $1 billion acquisition of mobile app maker Instagram, projecting that the deal would close in 2012 instead of closing in the second quarter as it had previously indicated.

Facebook provided no reason for the change, though a source familiar with the matter told Reuters last week that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has reached out to Google Inc and Twitter as part of the agency's standard review for deals of that size.

The price increase indicates intense market demand, which means Facebook's shares are likely to see a big pop on their first day of trading on the Nasdaq on Friday, analysts said.

"It's confounding but the evidence is that if companies raise the range, they will pop more," said Josef Schuster, founder of Chicago-based financial services firm IPOX Schuster LLC. "It signals that there is such a strong demand that it will create a momentum for other investors who want to jump on."

Facebook said in its latest filing that it arrived at the higher IPO price range after one week of marketing the offering - part of a cross-country "road show" in which CEO Zuckerberg has occasionally taken the stage to lay out his vision for the company's money-making potential and its top priorities.

The Facebook range hike, coupled with strong results from Internet and social media players Groupon Inc and China's RenRen Inc overnight, contributed to a dotcom rally on Wall Street on Tuesday.

Shares of Pandora Media Inc were up 6.9 percent at $10.50 in afternoon trading, while Zynga Inc was up 8.3 percent at $8.61. Groupon was up 13.7 percent at $13.33, while Renren gained 9.5 percent to $6.01. Yelp Inc stock was up 7.5 pct at $21.55.

In the biggest-ever IPO to emerge from Silicon Valley, Facebook will raise $12.1 billion based on the midpoint price of $36 and the 337.4 million shares on offer, or 12.3 percent of the company.

At this midpoint, Facebook would be valued at roughly 27 times its 2011 annual revenue, or 99 times earnings. When Google went public in 2004 at a valuation of $23 billion, it was valued at 16 times trailing revenue and 218 times earnings. Apple Inc, meanwhile, went public in 1980 at a valuation of 25 times revenue and 102 times earnings.

Wall Street had expected Facebook to increase its price range, with investors eager to get a slice of a strong consumer brand. The IPO road show began last week and has drawn crowds of investors from coast to coast.

Facebook plans to close the books on its IPO later on Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule, a source familiar with the deal told Reuters on Monday. It is scheduled to price its shares on Thursday and begin trading on the Nasdaq on Friday.

The IPO is already "well-oversubscribed," which is why the company will close its books earlier than expected, the source said.

Facebook's capital-raising target far outstrips other big Internet IPOs. Google raised just shy of $2 billion in 2004, while last year Groupon tapped investors for $700 million and Zynga raked in $1 billion.

The IPO comes amid concerns from some investors that Facebook has not yet figured out a way to make money from an increasing number of users who access the social network on mobile devices such as smartphones. Revenue growth from Facebook's online advertising business has also slowed in recent months.

Company executives met with prospective investors in Chicago on Monday and were slated to travel to Kansas City, Missouri, and Denver, before returning to Facebook's Menlo Park, California, headquarters.

A host of Wall Street banks are underwriting Facebook's offering, with Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs serving as leads. Facebook will trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol "FB."
