Shabazz Napier Says He'll Miss Coach Calhoun

EAST HARTFORD?

? Shabazz Napier developed a strong relationship with Jim Calhoun during his first two years at UConn, so his mentor's decision to retire shook the junior.

"When I heard the news, I kind of broke down," Napier said Saturday. "I wanted Coach to stay another year, but that's just me being biased. But I still go to his office every single day. I feel like our bond is still so strong. I'll still depend on him."

Napier and his UConn teammates were at Rentschler Field Saturday, signing autographs outside the stadium before the Buffalo-UConn football game. The Huskies were also introduced on the field in the first quarter.

New coach Kevin Ollie wasn't at Rentschler ? he was watching is son play for the Glastonbury High football team ? but the players accommodated a line of fans for about 90 minutes before the game. And Napier, who is recovering from foot surgery, talked about the coaching change.

The transition, he said, has been smooth.

"It's been actually easy," Napier said. "Coach Ollie, we all feel like he's a great coach and he's going to be a great coach. He's been tough on us, just like Coach Calhoun. That's why we felt like he was one of the best candidates to be the head coach. It's been hard because he strives for perfection."

Napier has worked closely with Ollie, a former guard. So answering to Ollie as the head coach isn't unusual.

"He's a friend," Napier said. "You can call on him anytime. He's a great guy to talk to. He's always been that person I turned to besides [Calhoun]. Seeing that he came in when I was a freshman, we just created a bond since then. There's been a lot of times I've been sitting in his office and talking with him. We've already created that bond."

Napier said he hoped Calhoun would return and he'll miss hearing the bellowing voice at practice. But Calhoun will still be around the program and Napier will continue to talk to him.

"It will be weird, but we've got Coach Ollie and Coach [Glen] Miller and Coach [George] Blaney ... they've all learned from Coach Calhoun," Napier said. "They understand how to strive for perfection."

As for Ollie's job status, Napier endorsed him as the coach for this year and beyond. Napier compares Ollie's one-year contract as head coach to the one-year deals he had as an NBA player.

"He's used to circumstances like this," Napier said. "I think that's what makes him a better man and it's why he's so mentally strong. Coach says to understand that you have to be mentally strong no matter what the circumstances are. You can't change the circumstances. He'll be great because he has such a passion."

Hyppolite Breaks One

Running back Lyle McCombs gained 97 yards on 29 carries, continuing his heavy workload. McCombs had 93 carries in the first four games and has been UConn's primary running threat.

But backup Martin Hyppolite made a bid for more touches after running 50 yards for a touchdown Saturday. Hyppolite, from Wakefield, Mass., is 214 pounds and provides a different look than the 166-pound McCombs.

"He's a bigger guy and there's some situations and some plays where we think that maybe bringing a guy in there who's a little bit bigger, you know, packs a little bit more lead in his pencil, so to speak ... we're trying to use Martin a little bit," coach Paul Paqualoni said.

Defensive Holes

UConn had just one sack (Trevardo Williams) and the lack of pressure could be attributed to injuries on the defensive line.

Jesse Joseph and Teddy Jennings are out. "We lost a lot of experience out there," Pasqualoni said. "It certainly is a factor. We're rotating different people in and out, based on down distance situations. ... Williams has 22.5 career sacks, second in school history. His 34.5 tackles for loss is ninth on the all-time list. ... Linebacker Jory Johnson had a career-high 14 tackles, including two for a loss. ... UConn is 16-4 against Buffalo and 19-4 against MAC opponents. ... Chandler Whitmer's 36-yard pass to Ryan Griffin was his longest completion of the season. ... As part of the Connecticut Day celebration, the NCAA Division III champion Trinity women's lacrosse team was honored between the first and second quarter. UConn also honored the New Haven-based Walter Camp Football Foundation during the second quarter while participants in the "Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities" took part in the pregame coin toss and were honored at halftime. There was also a local Boy Scout troop parading through Rentschler at halftime. ... Former UConn linebacker Scott Lutrus, a Brookfield native, was at the game. Lutrus, a member of the Indianapolis Colts, is on injured reserve with a torn ACL. ... Attendance was announced at 34,666, but the 40,000-seat stadium seemed about three-quarters full. The best home attendance this season was 35,270 for the opener against UMass. N.C. State drew 34,202.

Book Donations Make a Difference - Hobbies On A Budget

Book Donations Make a Difference ? #NickCFK #CBias

September 28, 2012 ? Books books luke

I have three kids that have a great selection of books here at home. They love to read and enjoy exploring new worlds inside the cover of a book. So last week I took the opportunity to talk to the director of our local Sunrise Children?s Home. We decided it would be a great idea to gather some gently loved children?s books to bring to the children that they work with who don?t have the same access to books that my kids have. I put out the word to our local community of readers and ended up with a huge box of Goosebumps chapter books, Dora the Explorer, Sponge Bob, Teenage Turtles, and more.

About the Book Donations

Because children in crisis situations are often not able to concentrate on their reading skills and educational goals, sometimes an activity book or coloring book with a popular character is just the thing needed to get them excited about reading. You can hop over and look at some of the books I found last week in Walmart when I first decided to look for some books for the Sunrise Children?s Home.

About Sunrise Children?s Home

Sunrise Children?s Services is a private provider of care to children who have suffered abuse and neglect. Licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and accredited by the Joint Commission, Sunrise operates a statewide network of residential centers and therapeutic foster homes. Currently, Sunrise serves over 500 children each day and thousands every year.

We gathered up the books and took them to the director today.

You can see my whole shop experience in pictures on my Google+ photo album.

Thanks to those who donated books, activity pads, chapter books, early readers, notebooks, school supplies and more. Together we can make a difference.

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? A popular fifth-grade teacher fatally shot a masked teenager in self-defense outside his neighbor's house during what appeared to be an attempted late-night burglary, then discovered the teen was his son, state police said.

Spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said Friday that police are trying to determine if the gun used by Jeffrey Giuliano, the father, was registered. It will be at least a week before the probe is done.

Tyler Giuliano, described as an easygoing 15-year-old who enjoyed flying small planes, was shot at about 1 a.m. Thursday in New Fairfield, a lake community of about 14,000 along the New York line just north of Danbury.

"It's something out of a Hollywood script," said First Selectman John Hodge, who doesn't recall another killing in his eight years on the job. "You certainly don't expect it to happen in your own small hometown where there's very little crime."

Jeffrey Giuliano's sister, who was alone in the home, believed someone was breaking in and called Giuliano, who lives next door, state police said. Giuliano grabbed a gun and went outside to investigate, troopers said.

He confronted someone wearing a black ski mask and black clothing and then fired his gun when the person went at him with a shiny weapon in his hand, police said. They would not provide details about what kind of weapon it was.

When police officers arrived almost immediately after they were called, the teen was lying in the driveway of his aunt's home with gunshot wounds and the father was sitting on the grass. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A state trooper pulled back the ski mask to reveal that the victim was Tyler Giuliano, though it was unclear if Jeffrey Giuliano already knew that. It was also unclear if he was actually trying to burglarize the house or if it was some type of prank gone wrong.

"All in all it's a tragedy," Vance said.

Jeffrey Giuliano hasn't returned a message seeking comment on what happened. Alicia Roy, superintendent of schools in New Fairfield, said Giuliano is a native of the town who offers summer music and zoology camps for his students and plays in a band that raises a lot of money for charity.

"''He wanted to teach in the community he grew up," she said. "He connects with the students. He's a caring person. Very interactive class."

Tyler Giuliano was a student at New Fairfield High School, a short walk from the neighborhood where he was killed. Roy said he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and was described as an easy-going young man who enjoyed spending time with his family. During a storm last year, he volunteered at a shelter set up the local high school, helping to serve meals and set up cots.

Roy said Tyler especially enjoyed flying gliders and single-engine planes out of Danbury airport.

"He would fly as many hours as possible," she said.

No charges have been filed. An autopsy is planned.

Slipping in polls, Romney assures voters 'I care'

(AP) ? Slipping in states that could sink his presidential bid, Republican Mitt Romney declared Wednesday that "I care about the people of America" and can do more than President Barack Obama to improve their lives. In an all-day Ohio duel, Obama scoffed that a challenger who calls half the nation "victims" was unlikely to be of much help.

Romney's approach reflected what he is up against: a widening Obama lead in polls in key states such as Ohio, the backlash from a leaked video in which he disparages Obama supporters as government-dependent victims, and a campaign imperative to make his policy plans more plain.

With under six weeks to go, and just one week before the first big debate, Obama's campaign reveled in the latest public polling ? but tried to crush any sense of overconfidence. "If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that," said campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

The day's setting was Ohio, where Obama's momentum has seemed to be growing. It's also a state no Republican has won the White House without carrying.

Romney went after working-class voters outside Columbus and Cleveland before rolling to Toledo. Obama rallied college crowds at Bowling Green and Kent State, reminding Ohioans their state allows them to start cast ballots next week. Early voting has already begun in more than two dozen other states.

For Romney, in his appearances and in a new TV ad in which he appeals straight to the camera, it was time for plain talk to contrast himself with Obama.

"There are so many people in our country who are hurting right now. I want to help them. I know what it takes," Romney told the crowd in Westerville. "I care about the people of America, and the difference between me and Barack Obama is I know what to do."

That message so late in the campaign ? a presidential nominee declaring his concern for all the people of the country ? was part of his widening effort to rebound from his caught-on-video comments at a fundraiser.

In those comments, made last May but only recently revealed, Romney said "47 percent of the people" pay no federal income tax, will vote for Obama no matter what, are victims, think the government must care for them and do not "take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

New opinion polls, conducted after the video became public, show Obama opening up apparent leads over Romney in battleground states, including Ohio and Virginia. And majorities of voters in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania say Romney's policies would favor the rich over the middle class or the poor.

Specifically in Ohio, two surveys show the president crossing the 50 percent mark among likely voters. A Washington Post poll found Obama ahead 52 percent to 44 percent among those most likely to turn out, and a Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times poll showed a 10-point Obama lead among definite voters.

Noting anew the Romney video comments, Obama said Wednesday: "We understand that America is not about what can be done for us. It's about what can be done by us together, as one nation, as one people."

And he added: "You can't make it happen if you write off half the nation before you take office."

Romney was showing signs of picking up his pace.

He scheduled a blizzard of interviews with ABC, CBS and NBC, his second round of broadcast network appearances in three days after weeks of ignoring their requests. He also did interviews Tuesday with Fox News and CNN.

The new Romney TV ad, at 60 seconds, is a longer and softer approach in which he speaks about people struggling to pay for food and gas with falling incomes.

At one point on Wednesday, the two candidates spoke from different sections of northern Ohio at the same time, their scenery as different as their message.

At a factory in Bedford Heights, Romney appeared on a stage surrounded by visual evidence of Ohio's manufacturing base ? giant coils of steel wire, metal beams, yellow "caution" signs ? and spoke as machines whirred in the background. He appeared with Mike Rowe, an everyman TV personality and pitchman.

Obama appeared at two packed college basketball arenas, delivering his message first to a boisterous crowd of more than 5,000 at Bowling Green State University and then to 6,000 screaming supporters at Kent State University.

He said a student who introduced him broke his wrist during a game of ultimate Frisbee. Exhorting the crowd to vote, he said, "You got to play through injuries."

The campaigns tried, too, for footholds on other fronts.

Both sides kept up their attempts to paint each other as weak in dealing with China, efforts aimed at wooing support from working-class voters whose jobs might suffer from imports from China.

The Romney campaign has started setting up flat-screen TV monitors at its events to screen a video about his personal and business story. It was first aired at the Republican National Convention as a way to introduce him to America but went unseen by most viewers because it did not run during prime-time coverage.

Romney also focused Wednesday on interest paid on the national debt, a subject he hasn't regularly discussed in his standard campaign speech. His comments came after a Washington Post poll showed the federal debt and deficit are the one set of issues where he has an advantage over Obama with likely voters.

Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, took a sharper approach. He told radio host Sean Hannity that Obama was using hollow tactics to paint his opponents as evil.

"He's basically trying to say 'If you want any security in your life stick with me. If you go with these Republicans they're going to feed you to the wolves. It's going to be a dog-eat-dog society,'" Ryan said.

In recent weeks, Romney has lost his polling edge on the economy generally, with more people saying they now trust Obama to fix the nation's economic woes.

Fighting back, new Republican-leaning independent groups jumped in Wednesday with advertising aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are undecided now. The commercials join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow and possibly shrinking map of competitive states.

"I will say that as time progresses, the field is looking like it's narrowing for them," said Psaki, the Obama campaign spokeswoman. "In that sense, we'd rather be us than them."

The president, though, did have his own ups and downs.

Air Force One aborted its approach into Toledo because of bad weather, forcing the commander of the presidential plane to circle the airfield.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year nearly 100,000 hospitalized patients die from infections acquired while undergoing treatment for other conditions. While many factors may contribute to the phenomenon, nurse staffing (i.e., the number of patients assigned to a nurse) has been implicated as a major cause.

A recent study by Dr. Jeannie P. Cimiotti of Rutgers College of Nursing and co-researchers concludes that the degree of "burnout" experienced by nurses could relate directly to the frequency with which patients acquire infections during hospital stays. Focusing exclusively on urinary tract and surgical site infections, the researchers found that while a significant correlation existed between the occurrence of such infections and the number of patients assigned to nurses, nurse staffing became less of a factor after accounting for nurse burnout.

From a sample of 161 acute care hospitals in Pennsylvania and an average of 45 nurses working at each sampled hospital, Cimiotti and her team measured nurse burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey. According to Maslach's theory, a critical component of burnout in nurses and other health care professionals is "emotional exhaustion." Emotional exhaustion is associated with emotional and cognitive detachment from work as a mechanism for coping with the demands and responsibilities of the job.

"We hypothesize that the cognitive detachment associated with high levels of burnout may result in inadequate hand hygiene practices and lapses in other infection control procedures among registered nurses," the researchers suggest. The researchers found that every 10 percent increase in burned-out nurses in an acute care hospital increases the rate of urinary tract infections by nearly one per 1,000 patients and increases the rate of surgical site infections by more than two per 1,000 patients.

"These findings are both statistically and clinically significant," the researchers posit. "If the proportion of nurses with high burnout could be reduced to 10 percent from the average 30 percent, some 4,160 infections would be prevented , leading to an estimated savings of $41 million." Not to mention the saving of many lives.

To reduce nurse burnout, the researchers recommend the implementation of organizational changes that effectively build job engagement. Examples include educational interventions, performance feedback, and social support.

This study is quite significant since in represents the first time nurse burnout has been associated with secondary infections. Since its publication in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC), AJIC's media tracker has traced more than 42 stories and 223 million impressions to the publication. Articles citing the study have appeared in USA Today, Daily Mail, NBCNews.com, The Philadelphia Inquirer, HealthLeaders Media, WTOP-FM, HealthDay, and Nurse.com, among others.

###

In addition to Cimiotti, the research team included Drs. Linda H. Aiken, Douglas M. Sloane, and Evan S. Wu, each from the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The research was supported by funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research--National Institutes of Health.

Cimiotti is an associate professor at Rutgers College of Nursing and the executive director of the New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nursing. She came to Rutgers in 2011 from the University of Pennsylvania where she served as a senior fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics and a member of the research team at the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research. Clinically trained as a pediatric nurse, Cimiotti's research interests focus on nurse workforce factors and the quality of patient care in the hospital setting for adult and pediatric clients. Of her many degrees, Cimiotti received her doctor of nursing science from Columbia University, her master of science in nursing from Rutgers University, Newark, and her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of the State of New York in Albany.

MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice | Celebrate Invest ...

investment options

Do you want to invest better? Who doesn?t? Today, September 25, is Invest Better Day, a day of investor education dreamed up by the jester-hatted money mavens at the Motley Fool.

Any conversation about investments tends to get bogged down by excruciating details, jargon, and ideology. ?My portfolio is outperforming your portfolio? is the petty grownup version of ?my dad can beat up your dad.?

Fortunately, most of what it takes to invest better has nothing to do with choosing the right mutual fund. I?ve put together my top five investment tips, and only one of them involves choosing the right kind of fund (and it?s plenty vague).

This is good news and bad: choosing a mutual fund is easy. You can do it online in five minutes. But investing better is more about managing human psychology and less about managing money ? it?s also about avoiding big mistakes, not about choosing the single best investment.

Enough backstory. Let?s get to the list.?

What?s the most important factor that determines how much money you?ll retire with?

It?s not which investments you choose ? it?s how much you?ve saved along the way. A recent study by Putnam Investments confirmed this, and the math is simple: save pennies, and no amount of great stock-picking will let you retire with a boat.

Save a high percentage of your salary (especially in your highest-earning years), and you can make plenty of investment mistakes and still come out okay.

Avoid high-interest debt

As Burton Malkiel and Charles Ellis put it in my favorite investing book, Elements of Investing, ?There are few, if any, absolute rules in saving and investing, but here?s ours: never, never, never take on credit card debt.?

Credit cards, installment loans, lines of credit, unsubsidized student loans: all of these are the opposite of investing. When you invest, you turn your money over to someone else and hope they?ll do something smart with it and hand back more money later.

When you borrow at a high rate, someone else is doing the same with you, minus the ?smart? part. Other than getting a 401(k) match, it doesn?t make sense to save for retirement while carrying an 18% credit card balance.?

Everyone is so tired of being told to get a 401(k) match that I?m not even putting it on the list. Fewer people, however, understand the massive tax savings you get from using tax-advantaged accounts like the 401(k), traditional or Roth IRA, health savings account, or 529 college savings plan.

Every time you put a dollar in one of these accounts, it?s like getting a match from Uncle Sam. Unless you?re saving for a specific near-term goal or an emergency fund, saving in a taxable account while you still have space available in a tax-advantaged account means paying unnecessary taxes. Yuck.

Automate

How do you achieve the high savings rate from tip #1? Only one way: automation. Unless you?re self-employed, your federal taxes come out of your paycheck automatically.

Why does the IRS require you to pay taxes this way? Because if people were required to set aside taxes on their own and pay once a year, most of us would spend it before April.

Indeed, the self-employed get into this mess all the time.

Take advantage of what the IRS knows and automate your own savings as much as possible: set up automatic paycheck deduction or an automatic checking account transfer (or both) to your retirement account.?

Pay less, get more?

Mutual funds charge you a fee for investing your money, but the fee is invisible: it comes out of your returns before you ever see it. The fee is called an ?expense ratio? and it?s expressed as a percentage, usually between 0.1% and 2%.

If a fund charges 1%, that means you pay 1% of whatever money you have in the fund every year. That sounds like a small fee but it?s not. The world?s biggest and most diversified mutual funds and ETFs charge less than .2%. Low expenses are an excellent predictor of better returns.?

This goes for your 401(k), too. In addition to the expense ratio for each fund, your 401(k) may pile on other management expenses.

New rules this year require 401(k)s to disclose all fees. Read your statement, and if you?re paying more than a small fraction of 1%, call your benefits office, team up with your fellow employees, make protest signs ? whatever you need to do. It?s your money.

So there you are: five ways to invest better, and none of them involve picking stocks, reading annual reports, or any other form of nerding out.

Overseas Dental Gurus Eye Opportunities in DenTech China Over ...

SHANGHAI, Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and organized by the China International Conference Center for Science & Technology, the Ninth People's Hospital of Shanghai-Jiao Tong University and Shanghai UBM ShowStar Exhibition Co., Ltd, the 16th China International Exhibition & Symposium on Dental Equipment, Technology & Products ("DenTech China 2012") will take place on October 24-27, 2012 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. This annual event is co-organized by the College of Stomatology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the?School of Stomatology of Tong Ji University and the Shanghai Stomatological Disease Center, with support from the China Association for Science and Technology, Chinese Stomatological Association and Shanghai Stomatological Association, as well as hundreds of stomatology colleges and hospitals in China and dental manufacturers worldwide. The 6th Asian Dental Lab Outsourcing Exhibition will be co-located with DenTech China.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120924/CN79508-b?)

DenTech 2012 is now regularly visited by some of the worlds most renowned? dental manufacturers. Thanks to 15 years of international collaboration, and with the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology as its official representative, while closely working with the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA), and strongly supported by VDDI, the German Pavilion is of special significance. Many of Germany's largest dental?manufacturers?will have their booths in the?Pavilion, including?Heraeus Kulzer, KaVo Dental, VITA, BEGO and Sirona Dental Systems, while other big names have already confirmed their attendance?in DenTech China 2012 also.

What?entices the German exhibitors to keep supporting and attending the event over?its fifteen editions? What matters most for the exhibitors in the German Pavilion to?keep them returning to?DenTech China?

First, the brand and impact of DenTech China counts most. Each year, a grand fleet of dental manufacturers from Germany brings their state-of-the-art products, with innovation and best quality, to the event, which is also one of the most eye-catching features of DenTech China over?its history. Established in 1994, DenTech China was the first event of its kind in China. It has been successfully held for 15 editions and developed into the most authoritative and most influential dental industry gathering in China and around Asia. With the attitude of professionalism and perseverance, DenTech China has grown into a leading exhibition throughout China's dental industry. All the guests going?to the event, including dentists, technicians, manufacturers and ordinary users, will witness the latest dental products and trends, as well as the high quality "Made in Germany."

DenTech China is an ideal platform to make business exchanges easier and more efficient, and the demand and supply between exhibitors and visitors?can be?witnessed to a full extent, which makes DenTech China an unparalleled brand of professional dental events that?attracts a great number of leading dental medicines, equipment, technology and traders from all over the nation and?from around?the world.

Second, the German exhibitors also attach high importance to Shanghai where DenTech China is based. Being the largest economic mega-city in China, Shanghai shoulders its historical mission to be oriented to the globe, serving other areas in China and collaborating with the Delta Area of East China. Occupying only 0.06% of China's total land area, 1% of China's total population, Shanghai covers 1/8 of the country's total fiscal revenue, 1/10 cargo throughput?via ports, and 1/4 of China's total value of import and export commodities. Based in such a robust city, DenTech boasts?the right place and the right time, which makes?helps to?guarantee its?success with an increasingly high popularity for more than a decade.

In addition, the U.S. National Pavilion at DenTech China has been?present for the past?two years. Supported by the Dental Trade Alliance USA (DTA), the U.S. exhibitors are bringing in a new generation of high quality American dental products. Dozens of U.S companies with an overwhelming reputation?throughout the world take an active part in the event, including?3M, Johnson & Johnson, American Orthodontics and?Ultradent.

DenTech China 2013 (the 17th China International Exhibition & Symposium on Dental Equipment, Technology & Products) will be held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center on October 23-26, 2013. Both sides would win from Cyprus unification: U.N. envoy

NICOSIA (Reuters) - The UN mediator on Cyprus, seeking to end a four-decade diplomatic deadlock, said Greek and Turkish sides now had strong economic reasons to agree a reunification that could help ease debt problems and speed exploitation of disputed gas fields.

"Both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have economic difficulties," Alexander Downer, special advisor on Cyprus to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, said.

"It is a good opportunity to remind people that a solution to the Cyprus problem will be economically very beneficial and it will certainly be well received by the international community," he told Reuters in an interview.

Greek Cypriots representing Cyprus internationally were forced to seek aid from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union in June to prop up their banks, badly exposed to debt-crippled Greece.

Turkish Cypriots living north of a buffer zone splitting the island's two main populations are economically and politically isolated, relying on financial handouts from Ankara.

Cyprus was split in a 1974 Turkish military invasion triggered by a brief Greek Cypriot coup instigated by the military then ruling Greece.

The conflict has come into sharper focus with natural gas discoveries in the eastern Mediterranean. Greek Cypriots reported their first major discovery in December 2011, while Turkey launched an on-shore drill in northern Cyprus in April.

Cyprus, an EU member now holding the rotating presidency of the bloc, has, like every other EU country, veto rights over Turkey's bid to join the EU.

TEMPORARY PEACE

"It's peaceful, but everyone knows this is temporary, and everyone knows there needs to be a solution which is permanent," said Downer, whose office is in a sprawling U.N. compound which was once Nicosia's international airport, scene of some of the fiercest fighting in 1974.

The bullet-riddled shell of a Cyprus Airways aircraft squats on a runway overgrown with weeds, testament to the violence.

"It (reunification) would reduce the sovereign risk of investing in Cyprus, clear up the problems of investing in property, grow GDP and offer capacity to service and pay off debt," Downer said.

"It would be an economic boon to Cyprus just when it needs one. There's gas, but that is years off until that is sold."

Four years ago, the United Nations launched a new round of talks, the latest of many peace efforts. Downer is still cautiously optimistic about cracking a deal and succeeding where dozens before him failed.

"It is hard," said Downer, a former Australian foreign minister. "There have been efforts made for 38 years to solve the Cyprus problem. A lot has been achieved, there are a lot of convergences, there is a basic plan, but the deal hasn't been done."

Greek and Turkish Cypriots agree in principle on reuniting the island as a federation, but differ on how it would work. Differences remain on core issues ranging from how Cyprus is to be co-governed to property claims from thousands of internally displaced people.

ELECTION DELAY

Direct talks between the leaders of the Greek and the Turkish Cypriots have been on hold for several months, partly because of a Greek Cypriot poll in 2013 to elect a new president.

The United Nations has also backed off from plans to call a multilateral conference because of Greek Cypriot objections about the timing.

"The risk of failure and of total collapse was way too high, and it would have been reckless for us to have called a multilateral conference, and that was the advice I gave the secretary-general," Downer said.

Downer said the time between now and the election next February was focused on talks with technocrats between the two sides. "In terms of negotiations on the substantial issues, we will get them under way once a new president has been elected."
