Taylor Swift's "Never Ever" breaks music chart record

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Country star Taylor Swift's latest single made a record-breaking entry in Wednesday's Billboard Digital Songs chart, scoring the biggest digital sales week ever for a song by a female artist.

Swift's song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," an infectious, punky country-pop anthem, quickly rose through the charts and gained strong radio play after its release last week, selling 623,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The song also hit the Billboard Country singles chart, as Swift's music has attracted fans of both country and pop.

"Taylor appeals to a younger female demographic that tends to buy a lot of music and after the years, she's become a staple of two pretty popular formats, country and pop, and she's able to manipulate both formats and be played across both," Silvio Pietroluongo, director of charts at Billboard, told Reuters.

Pop singer Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" previously held the title for the biggest first-week digital sales by a female artist, with 610,000 downloads.

Only male rapper Flo Rida's "Right Round," featuring Ke$ha, sits above Swift as the single with the largest first-week download sales, clocking in at 636,000 copies.

The success of Swift's latest single - the first to be released from her upcoming, fourth studio album "Red" - sold almost double the number of her previous best-selling song, "Love Story," which debuted with 360,000 copies in the first week of its release in December 2008.

Swift, 22, has won fans with her raw lyrics, and the singer has often said her songs are about real life experiences. She addressed her 2010 song "Dear John" to singer John Mayer after their relationship ended.

Swift has also dated celebrities Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal and is currently dating a member of the Kennedy family.

"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" has piqued the curiosity of Swift's fans over the past week as they try to uncover which one of her famous ex-boyfriends was the subject of the song.

Phishing in Season: A Look at Online Fraud in 2012 ? Speaking of ...

The results are in for the first half of 2012, and once again, phishing attack numbers mark a notable increase on the global scale.

Compared with H2 2011, end of June numbers show a 19% increase as phishers heavily target the UK, U.S. and Canada ? and their associated brands ? with?the same old online trickery that continues to plague the world.

Why is this older, well-known, and rather simplistic threat still so prevalent today? Read on about the numbers, the attacked countries and the reasons why phishing remains successful still.

A Numbers Game

1H2012 phishing attack numbers mark the fourth increase recorded since 2H2010, this time jumping 19% compared with 2H2011. Through the first half of the year, attack numbers averaged monthly at 32,581.

As for monetary losses, 1H2012 statistics released by RSA in July, show that estimated worldwide losses from phishing attacks alone amounted to over US$687 million. This number was calculated using a lower attack uptime median and yet, it marks a 32% increase in losses when compared with last year?s equivalent (1H2011), and a slight decrease when compared with 2H2011.?

The interesting part this time was the fact that the industry?s attack duration median (uptime), according to the Anti-Phishing Working Group,?went down from 15.3 hours per attack to 11.72 hours per attack, thus somewhat curbing the monetary impact of each attack, even though attack numbers keep climbing.??Had attack medians remained the same, the monetary losses to phishing in 1H2012 would have exceeded US$897 million. Statistically speaking, this saved the world close to an additional 31% in money that could have been lost to phishing attackers.

The roster of top countries most attacked by phishing in the first half of the year did not present any surprises; the same shortlist displayed the countries most attacked on a monthly basis, with the top?five constituents being the UK, U.S., Canada, Brazil and South Africa.

There have been major increases in phishing attack volume in some countries, while slight declines were recorded for others. One of the most significant increases was seen in Canada, where phishing increased nearly 400% in the first half of 2012. There have been many speculations as to why the sharp increase, but the main reason is simply economics ? fraudsters follow the money. With the Canadian and U.S. dollar being exchanged at nearly a 1:1 ratio, Canada has become a lucrative target for cybercrime.

The Prevalence of an Old Threat

Phishing has been around for over 16 years now, and yet, the world has not been able to rid itself of this phenomenon. Phishing is still one of the top threats on the Internet today; but what makes phishing remain such a successful threat in spite of the industry?s experience with this online menace?

At the core of this seemingly simple threat lies a powerful force? human emotion. Although phishing is a 21st century crime, manipulation, deceit and persuasion are not.? What makes phishing so successful is its social engineering component which drives the schemes used by cybercriminals today to manipulate online users into disclosing private information.?

In social psychology, one of the routes to persuasion is designed to get a person to purposefully not think ? but rather react emotionally and react immediately. Again, not new. Persuasion schemes have always been and still are, vastly used in confidence scams and in telemarketing fraud.

Because persuasion is such a pervasive component in our lives, it is easy to overlook the external influences affecting us. When it comes to phishing, cybercriminals rely on persuasion in getting a victim to act on emotions such as anxiety or excitement.

Every phishing attack is built with emotional triggers. Intended readers have to be convinced that they need to visit the URL for a reason valid and credible enough to cause them to impart their credentials and personal information.

The better ploys add these common human motivators and emotions to the mix:

• Rightful Rewards: Tax refunds, prizes

In terms of numbers and effectiveness of attack ploys, it appears that the most successful campaigns rely on trust.? This explains?a current and prominent trend of phishing via social networking sites.??

Creating that rush of strong emotion within a potential victim repeatedly enables cybercriminals to elicit an immediate response as the victim?s ability to think logically will likely be hindered.

Crime in the cyber arena is a big threat to the exponentially growing online population which loses billions to online fraud every year. Quarter by quarter we see that phishing is only picking up more speed; attacks are qualitatively better than ever and numbers are still on the rise.? While DefenseReview (DR) was attending NDIA Special Operations Forces Industry Conference 2012 (SOFIC 2012), we shared a cab one day with a retired Australian military SOF assaulter/operator. When we casually inquired about any tactical hardware/technology he was interested in, one of the products he mentioned was the M5 Network Security SCS-100 Secure Communications System. In fact, he was pretty excited about it, which really piqued our interest in it.

So, we hightailed it on over to the M5 Network Security booth and ran into the company's Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Merik Karman, whom we promptly interviewed about the new tech. The SCS-100 Secure Communications System is essentially a small, lightweight mobile encrypted tactical communications (tactical comms) module that can be connected to a soft phone (VoIP phone), laptop computer or tablet computer to enable the operator to engage in encrypted/secure tactical comms (tactical communications) with whomever else has a SCS-100 or SCS-200 module on hand.

Mr. Karman had the following to say about the SCS-100 during our interview with him (we've edited out our questions):

"So, the SCS-100 here is essentially a fly-away kit or a solo [unintelligible]. This device here is everything you need to affect secure communications other than the laptop that you?re gonna? use. So, basically in that case is your high-grade crypto, as well as this device here. We try and make this as easy to use as possible, allowing the person that?s traveling to not require communications support. So, literally no communications support, a high-ranking officer, a high-ranking officer, a solo?a liaison officer can achieve secure communications without their aid. So, for example, here, we?re running over hotel [WiFi], and I could?additional to that, I could bring up a WiFi bearer and connect using the easy-to-use touchscreen, find a wireless network, join it, and mesh my communications back with the strategic interface.

I can, additional to that, use a soft phone (VoIP phone) on this device, make a phone call, there's a battery in-built, so I can transition from the hotel?battery included, so I can remove the power and transition from a fixed situation in a hotel to a car, plug it into the cigarett lighter and go live on [unintelligble] on-the-move terminal or on 3G or 4G. So, basically, everything you need, here, in-built to this tiny little package. This has 3G, 4G, WiFi, video cell, 3-gigabit ethernets, all built into this device, including cybersecurity [also written cyber-security].

These days, as we rely more on more on net-centric warfare, we rely more and more on networks to conduct our busines, we must be vigilant to the cyber threat. The problem is that we would typically rely on strategic sensors to find out what's going on. What we're doing with this is we're actually putting intrusion detection and firewall capability right out at the tactical edge. So, that's what makes this product a little bit different [from] others. So, this laptop is connected through here, drawing a [WiFi] bearer from a hotel internet service, communicating back with a tactical interface in Australia [and] performing a video conference with that device over there, the SCS-200. This [SCS-200] is a larger model. This one here [SCS-200] is designed to support five (5) people, where the 100 is designed to support only one (1).

Well, this here [SCS-200] has soft phones, both on the red sides, and sipanet and nipanet phones built-in, but it also provides power-over-ethernet to a fixed handset to support normal voice-over-IP telephony. That?s [laptop] communicating to that one there via that same system. So, it's a fully meshed IP communication system using public IP bearer system."

When Defense Review commented that the SCS-100 appeared to be the "coolest little thing" at the booth, Karman replied "Yeah, yeah, this [SCS-100] is game-changing in terms of its form factor. Imagine previously having to carry a great big briefcase with all sorts of equipment. Literally, now, we?re talking about this [SCS-100] and a laptop."

Princeton's Resource Center for Breast Cancer ? Princeton Found

The Bramwell House

The YWCA Princeton on Paul Robeson Place has many programs, but one in particular is the Breast Cancer Resource Center. This barnyard red facility located in the historic Bramwell House facing Route 206 is primarily for use by Central Jersey and Bucks County residents, but people travel far and wide for their extensive offerings.

I was introduced to the director Kara Stephenson last year, and attended their annual fundraiser (In the Pink Fashion Show) in October. ?I was touched by all of the stories, and amazed by the abundant resources available for breast cancer patients, survivors, and family.

Did you know that about 25% of insured women forget about getting mammograms? Many believe that size matters, and that teens and young adults don?t need to be concerned about breast cancer. Some ?think using antiperspirants or wearing an underwire bra causes breast cancer, but it?s not true. What can increase chances of getting it is increased levels of estrogen. Myths and facts discussed at BCRC.

The?Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) accepts health insurance, but also enables uninsured or underinsured patients to use their services thanks to a designated fund. The BCRC focuses on three aspects concerning breast cancer: Community Outreach, Information, and Support.

Community Outreach

Early detection is key. Outreach helps to educate women and girls about regular screening.

Breast Cancer Awareness Talks ? BCRC will go to schools, churches, organizations, businesses, or groups to get the word out. Symptoms, screening and risk factors are discussed, but sometimes the most effective tools are survivors who share their personal stories.

Health and Community Fairs ? BCRC participates in fairs sponsored by groups and organizations. questions are answered, and educational material are handed out.

One Step Ahead ? This program is funded by Princeton Radiology, who give free mammograms to those in need.

Information?

Breast Cancer Information ? There is someone available to answer questions, provide print material, and give referrals.

Newsletter ? The Source offers information about nutrition, programs and services, exercise, and more.

Networking Nights ? Learn more about breast cancer from local and regional experts, and share experiences, while enjoying a healthy dinner.

Resource Library ? BCRC has journals, magazines, books, reference materials, videos and CDs to use at the facility or to borrow.

Support

Mind and Body Wellness Programs ? Activities like yoga, Zumba, Pilates, meditation, water exercises, and ?retreats?help you maintain your quality of life during and after treatment.

Patient Assistant Fund ? This provides financial support to those who are uninsured or underinsured. The turn around is one day.

Private Counseling ? Perfect for those who don?t wish to join a support group.

Support Groups ? There are several groups who meet in the Living Room on various days to cope with treatment and after treatment. There?s one for under 40s, Latinas (in Spanish), Coping with Breast Cancer (same people in group for six weeks), Beyond Breast Cancer (revolving people in group), Stage 4 (dealing with fears of dying and helping them live life).

Wig and Prosthesis Boutique ? Additionally, there?s the Look Good, Feel Good program for make-up application and wig styling.

Woman-to-Woman Network ? This matches survivors with new patients.

Cancer and Careers to help explain gaps in your r?sum?, who to tell, and knowing what to do if you get fired, and they provide a free dinner alternating months. Mitt Romney's Other Big Role: RNC Set Designer

Mitt Romney has a reputation for being a straight-laced, conservative guy numbers cruncher, but the Republican National Convention will be a chance to change that impression. Except that the guy in charge of that event's pageantry? Mitt Romney himself.?

The convention's action will mostly happen on a big fat stage. The details of the stage design matter, as the Obama campaign found out when everyone made fun of all the grandiose Greek columns at the 2008 Democratic convention in Denver. It's clear Romney's done a bit of thinking about conventions past, because he referenced those unfortunate columns in April, saying he doesn't expect to see them this time. Obama is "not going to want to remind anyone of Greece," Romney said, "because he's put us on a road to become more like Greece."

Romney was presented with six possible stage designs earlier this summer, and he nixed every single one of them, The Washington Post's Philip Rucker reports. Romney oversaw the opening ceremonies at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, so he "fancies himself as having a trained eye for stagecraft," and aides had to come up with something better.

The result? A $2.5 million stage inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, The New York Times' Jeremy W. Peters reports. The podium will be 6 feet high and staircases will slope up to it from the audience, as did the Denver stage in 2008. But instead of a row of columns, there will be a ton of dark wood and video screens -- screens in the rafters to imitate skylights, 13 screens on the podium, sized from 8 feet by 8 feet to 29 feet by 12 feet. All those screens will be wood-framed. When the speakers are talking about the bummer economy, sad Americans will flick across the screens. When they're talking about the candidate, Romney's kids will appear on the screens. A national debt clock will tick away on another screen.?Romney personally approved the slogan, "A Better Future," Peters reports.

The dark wood is supposed to make the stage look cozy, like "you?re looking into someone?s living room," Romney adviser Russ Schriefer told The?Times. "This is his moment," another adviser, Tom Rath, told The?Post. "All the political stuff is gone in the eyes of most Americans?They?re going to look at this as who is this person? Can I wake up every morning for the next four years with this man as President of the United States?"

Qaeda suicide bomber kills Yemen militia chief

A suspected Al-Qaeda suicide bomber blew himself up early Sunday in southern Yemen killing the commander of a local pro-army militia and wounding six people, a government official told AFP.

Two children were among the wounded in the town of Mudiya in the restive southern province of Abyan, the official said.

"An Al-Qaeda suicide bomber managed to enter a home used as a base by the Popular Resistance Committees and activated an explosives belt killing the local commander Nasser Ali Mansur and wounding six," he said.

The committees have recently become a target for Al-Qaeda militants who were forced to flee Abyan in June following battles led by the army, with the local militiamen backing them up.

A doctor in Aden told AFP he had helped evacuate three of the wounded from an hospital in the Abyan city of Loden to a bigger facility in Aden "because they are in critical condition."

The attack came hours after suspected Al-Qaeda militants killed 19 soldiers in a rocket attack and suicide bombing on Saturday that targeted intelligence headquarters in Aden, the main southern city in Yemen.

Al-Qaeda militants remain active in southern Yemen, where separatist militants also attack security forces, pressing their demands for renewed independence for the south.

South Yemen was a separate state before unification with the north in 1990.

This Twenty Six Hour Day Is Not Fiction! A Book Review

Vince Panella might have been accused of writing a work of fiction when titling his book "The 26 Hour Day, How to Gain at Least 2 Hours a Day with Time Control". When he begins his "Introduction to Time Control" chapter by stating on the first page that he's . . . "come to the conclusion that -- time management does not work!" he immediately had me hooked.

I was charmed by the intensely human approach he takes from the beginning. I've got to agree with him because my own experience with time management is that it has a mechanistic, almost robotic feel to it as presented by efficiency experts, management consultants and minutia-charting time accountants. Here is an approach that allows for "wasting time" and, even more surprisingly, advocates getting sufficient sleep!

Although he suggests wasting incrementally less time than you normally might he is clearly aware that as human beings, we are driven less by deadlines than by emotional needs. At least once in every chapter, reminding the reader that we are not perfect and that it's OK that we're not precise as robots.

Panella blends the best of self improvement with his unique approach to what he calls "Time Control", quoting personal growth gurus Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra beside references to American Statistician, W. Edwards Deming, the man who was ". . . given credit for engineering Japan's modern industrial success over the last 50 years." Deming guided Japanese business through a formula of continual success improvement.

Constant incremental refining of success formulas is certainly not limited to Deming. One of my strongest early inspirations was reading "The Autobiography of Ben Franklin", in which the continual improvement of Franklin's character throughout his life is chronicled. Self improvement predated Franklin as well, but Panella has combined the best of personal growth with time control to offer what he has called "Success Centered Time Management."

Although Panella does cover critical topics typical to time management such as standard issue and admittedly important -

* Winning the War Against Procrastination * The Power and Purpose of Goals * Reducing Distractions

Those key points are presented in ways that kept my interest, a surprising accomplishment in itself. But Panella has some more compelling thoughts on some new approaches he has refined over his nearly 20 years of presenting this material. Notable are several concepts that resonate strongly with humanity.

* Gain 2 More Hours a Day Through the Power of Sleep As one with sleep apnea disorder, I require more sleep than most, but Panella boldly proclaims that, "Lack of adequate sleep is the reason for 90 percent of the problems many of us experience in gaining more control of our time."

He makes a strong case for a society that values sleep far more than does ours. He goes so far as to cite a Gallup poll that showed "Twenty-Five percent of adults believe they cannot be successful AND get enough sleep!" He gives ample reasons, from reduced productivity and performance right on through loss of life caused by drowsiness and inattention.

* Bit by Bit, The Amazing Power of Five Minutes

This section emphasizes devoting a simple five minutes to gradual progress toward seemingly huge goals on a daily basis. Slow and steady wins the race might describe this approach. He refers to this technique throughout the book in varied ways to suggest that progress doesn't have to be measured in tireless devoted hours of struggle, but can be achieved much more easily "bit by bit."

* Moments, The Secret of Life

As a teenager, I wondered what my life might look like as a two hour movie and imagined what little slices of time might make it to the final cut (as I experienced one of my first identity crises upon finishing high school). Panella suggests that all of our lives are much like that and are defined by individual moments of positive accomplishment and that all lives are made up of a collection of small moments we strongly identify with and remember powerfully.

The striking concept he delivers in the book is that we not only have that inventory of past moments, but that we should consider steadily depositing in a bank account of moments from each day, and further, that we consider investing to accumulate a wealth of moments. "Every day, consciously look to create significant and simple moments" to add to your "moments account".

* Maximizing Any Experience

"Before any event or experience . . . simply ask yourself how prepared you are . . . for the event. You'll go through details in your head and take a subjective measurement . . . Then you'll ask yourself what you can do to make the event a little better ahead of time. You'll repeat asking this question . . . listing your answers . . . When complete, you'll have a laundry list of actions to maximize the event . . . You get to play armchair quarterback ahead of time. You pull yourself back and look at the big picture with a chance to make positive changes. Something we fail to do more times than not."

"Maximizing almost seems too easy." Indeed it does, but what a powerful tool if we only developed the habit.

The 26 Hour Day, I'm convinced, is a real possibility in terms of maximising events, investing in our moments with sincere gratitude and bit by bit, in multiple five minute increments, we can gain additional value from our alloted time.

Vince Panella has unwittingly given me the blueprint for my New Years Resolutions for 2002. I'm committed to investing significant time to his program of continual success improvement over the coming year.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Families waiting for San Francisco's cable cars on a recent morning couldn't help but notice Kenny the Clown, who wore a curly rainbow wig as he twisted brightly colored balloons into animal shapes for visitors, blasting Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" from an iPad at his feet.

Little did the clown know that the tablet doubling as his stereo would turn out to have been stolen from the home of the late Steve Jobs.

"The thing that is embarrassing to me is I'm a huge fan of Steve Jobs," said Kenneth Kahn, 47, a professional entertainer who police say unwittingly received a silver 64GB iPad pilfered from the home of the Apple co-founder last month. "It's just bizarre."

Kahn's friend, Kariem McFarlin, 35, of Alameda was arrested on suspicion of breaking into Jobs' Palo Alto residence on Aug. 2.

The pair had been planning a vacation to Hawaii, and when their trip fell through, Kahn said McFarlin gave him the iPad in exchange for money he had borrowed.

"He owed me $300 for the plane tickets, so he said he had an Apple computer that he wasn't using anymore. I said fine, not having any clue what the hell was going on," Kahn told The Associated Press on Friday.

Kahn, a well-known local street performer who has also made unsuccessful bids to become mayor of Alameda and San Francisco, said he never examined the contents of the device and had no idea where it came from.

It was unclear if Jobs had ever used it.

Kahn said he downloaded Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," the "Pink Panther," and other tunes for his clowning routine, which includes magic shows and torch juggling on a unicycle.

Kahn said he played pop songs on the iPad for a few days at several San Francisco landmarks and at an Alameda street fair before police came for it. The device has been returned to the family of Jobs, who died last Oct. 5.

Apple investigators identified McFarlin after he used the stolen device to connect to his iTunes account on the Internet, police said. He acknowledged to police that he broke into Jobs' residence, as well as other homes, and wrote an apology letter to Jobs' widow, according to a police report.

The unoccupied Palo Alto home was targeted on July 17 because it was under renovation, authorities said. When construction crews left, a burglar hopped a fence and found a spare key, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

The newspaper said the thief apparently didn't realize he was in Jobs' house until he saw a letter addressed to the Silicon Valley icon.

During the 15-hour overnight heist, Jobs' wallet and driver's license were taken as well as iPhones, iPads, iPods, Mac computers, champagne and $60,000 worth of Tiffany & Co. jewelry, police said.

Kahn said he met McFarlin when he coached him on a high school basketball team in Alameda more than a decade ago.

"Kariem and I used to talk about ethics all the time, so I thought we were on the same page," Kahn said. "I guess he just got desperate, and made a terrible decision."

McFarlin remained jailed on $500,000 bail and was expected to appear in court Monday. If convicted, he could face almost eight years in prison.

Kahn said he has not been questioned in the case. Law enforcement officials did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

The Santa Clara County public defender's office, which is officially representing McFarlin, did not immediately provide comment. McFarlin has recently hired a private attorney who wants to remain anonymous until Monday's hearing.

Ecuador grants asylum to Assange, angering Britain

LONDON/QUITO (Reuters) - Ecuador has granted political asylum to WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange, Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said on Thursday, a day after the British government threatened to storm the Ecuadorean embassy in London to arrest the former hacker.

Britain has said it is determined to extradite him to Sweden, where he is accused of rape and sexual assault, but Assange fears he will ultimately be sent to the United States which is furious that his WikiLeaks website has leaked hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic and military cables.

Ecuador's decision is likely to deepen a political dispute over Assange's extradition with Britain, which said it was "disappointed" with the ruling, and sets the stage for possible further confrontation between the two countries.

Patino said Ecuador feared for the safety of the Australian, who had lodged an asylum request with President Rafael Correa, a self-declared enemy of "corrupt" media and U.S. "imperialism".

"Ecuador has decided to grant political asylum to Julian Assange following the request sent to the President," Patino told a news conference in Quito.

Patino said Assange's extradition to a third country without proper guarantees was probable, and that legal evidence showed he would not get a fair trial if eventually transferred to the United States.

"This is a sovereign decision protected by international law. It makes no sense to surmise that this implies a breaking of relations (with Britain)," Patino added.

Assange has been holed up inside Ecuador's embassy in central London for eight weeks since he lost a legal battle to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Even after Thursday's decision his fate is still far from clear: Britain has promised to extradite him and the removal of the Ecuadorean embassy's diplomatic status would expose him to immediate arrest by the British authorities.

"We are disappointed," a Foreign Office spokesman said.

"Under UK law, with Mr Assange having exhausted all options of appeal, the British authorities are under a binding obligation to extradite him to Sweden. We shall carry out that obligation."

EMBASSY STRESS?

Outside the Ecuadorean embassy near London's famed Harrods department store, supporters relayed the announcement about his asylum request over a loudspeaker to cheers and clapping from protesters who had gathered outside the building.

Supporters shouted: "The people united will never be defeated!", waving Ecuadorian flags and holding posters showing Assange's head, reading "no extradition".

A Reuters reporter saw at least three protesters being dragged away by police before the decision was announced after tussles with police.

It was unclear how long Assange could stay in the small embassy - housed on the ground floor of an apartment block - which is under 24-hour surveillance by British police.

After the announcement, the BBC reported that Assange had thanked the staff in the London embassy for their support and had said to them: "things will get more stressful now".

Britain has said it could use a little-known piece of legislation from 1987, introduced in the wake of the shooting of a British police officer outside the Libyan embassy in London, to strip Ecuador's embassy of its diplomatic status.

The Ecuadorean government has bristled at the warning: its foreign minister said Britain was threatening Ecuador with a "hostile and intolerable act", comparing the action to Iran's storming of Britain's Tehran embassy 2011.

"I've lived, worked and travelled in places with proper dictatorships and nowhere have I seen violations of the Vienna convention to this extent," said Farhan Rasheed, 42, a historian wearing an "I love Occupy" badge, outside the embassy.

"Here we have a government which claims to be a government of law and justice, stretching and possibly about to break a serious binding international agreement."

Britain's threat to withdraw diplomatic status from the Ecuadorean embassy also drew criticism from one of its own former diplomats who said it could lead to similar moves against British embassies.

"I think the Foreign Office have slightly overreached themselves here," Britain's former ambassador to Moscow, Tony Brenton, told the BBC.

"If we live in a world where governments can arbitrarily revoke immunity and go into embassies then the life of our diplomats and their ability to conduct normal business in places like Moscow where I was and North Korea becomes close to impossible."

SEX CRIME?

Assange, whom Sweden wants to question over accusations of rape and sexual assault made by two female former WikiLeaks volunteers in August 2010, says he fears Sweden could send him on to the United States.

His supporters have said U.S. authorities want to punish him for publishing diplomatic cables which laid bare Washington's power-brokering across the globe.

"The reaction he has is that he wants to underline that this (asylum) is a measure that is aimed at the U.S. and not against Sweden," said Per E Samuelsson, one of the lawyers representing Assange who talked to Assange after the decision.

"He has sought political asylum in order to eliminate the risk that he will spend the rest of his life in prison in the United States," Samuelsson said.

Ecuador said it had tried to get assurances from Britain and Sweden that Assange could not be extradited to a third country but that no assurance was given. Under European law, neither Britain nor Sweden could extradite anyone to a country where they might face the death penalty.

Swedish prosecutors have not yet charged Assange, but they believe they have a case to take to trial and the lawyer for the two Swedish women who made the allegations against Assange said his clients deserved justice.

"It's an abuse of the asylum instrument, the purpose of which is to protect people from persecution and torture if sent back to one's country of origin," Claes Borgstrom, the lawyer representing the two Swedish women, told Reuters.

"It's not about that here. He doesn't risk being handed over to the United States for torture or the death penalty. He should be brought to justice in Sweden. This is completely absurd."
