Today?s gorgeous family home comes to us from Adelaide, and belongs to multi-tasking creative Rebekah Cichero ? co-founder of Adelaide?s much loved Bowerbird Bazaar markets, and propertietor of sweet furniture and interiors shop One Small Room! ?Rebekah is one seriously energetic and inspiring creative, having lived in London for 8 years working as a stylist before settling down in Adelaide with partner Tim. If all this sounds a touch familiar, that?s because we?interviewed?Rebekah this time last year! ?(Re-visit our original interview for the full backstory!).

Nestled in Adelaide?s leafy suburb of Croydon, this generous Victorian family house actually backs onto Rebekah?s gorgeous little shop. ?It?s home to Rebekah and husband Timothy, plus?Ruby (8 yrs), Tobias (5 yrs) and Chico the dog. ?The family have been here nearly five years.

Whilst it still retains much of its original charm, this home has been thoroughly renovated and extended to modernise and open up it?s functional spaces for this busy family. ?These works happened in roughly two stages. ?The front rooms were renovated when the family first moved in, and room layout reconfigured to make way for an ensuite and walk-in robe in the master bedroom. ?A few years later the full home extension was completed ? including new open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area, and a new main bathroom. ?Rebekah and Timothy also?landscaped the front yard, added a new fence and rainwater tanks to ensure a healthy and productive garden, even in Adelaide?s notoriously dry summers.

If you?ve been to Rebekah?s sweet shop, One Small Room, then the eclectic edit of furniture and artwork here will be no surprise! ?As is often the case with creative retailers, Rebekah?s home is an extension of her shop and vice versa ? furniture and art finds itself on high rotation between both spaces. ??We often find new favourites when sourcing for the shop, so we move something out from home and sell it to someone else to love!? says Rebekah.

There are, however, a few treasured pieces she and Tim would never part with. ??We do have some favourite pieces, the stripped back carousel horse and the Le Corbusier ?LC 4? chaise (?Tim?s chair?) bought when we lived in London, pre-children? says Rebekah.?Other favourite pieces include two paintings by Jacob Logos. ??We all fell in love with the artwork of Jacob Logos, so deciding on the painting above the fireplace (Little Sundance)?and another above our bed (Evening Hunt) was a very easy decision? recalls Rebekah.

As is often the case with a weekly home features, it?s not so much the house but the whole neighbourhood which Rebekah and her family call home. ??We live right near the iconic ?Queen st? strip with the best bakery ever (Red Door Bakery) and of course our shop, only about a metre away from our home and office!? says Rebekah. ??Croydon is an amazing community of creative types, caring people who say hi when you walk by. Kids meet and play on Sundays while parents have coffee, you can get a good haircut, ride bikes and still be in the city in 7 minutes or to the beach in 15 or the hills in 40! Nothing?s too far away. We feel rather lucky here?. ?Ahhh Adelaide, such a Utopian land?!

Big thanks to Rebekah and co. for sharing their fabulous family home ? do share the love with a little visit to the One Small Room?and Bowerbird Bazaar?websites. ?Thanks too, to?Jacqui Way?for the stunning shots!

Mammoth storm Sandy plunges NYC into darkness

NEW YORK (AP) ? Much of New York was plunged into darkness Monday by a superstorm that overflowed the city's historic waterfront, flooded the financial district and subway tunnels and cut power to hundreds of thousands of people.

The city had shut its mass transit system, schools, the stock exchange and Broadway and ordered hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to leave home to get out of the way of the superstorm Sandy as it zeroed in on the nation's largest city.

Residents spent much of the day trying to salvage normal routines, jogging and snapping pictures of the water while officials warned the worst of the storm had not hit.

By evening, a record 13-foot storm surge was threatening Manhattan's southern tip, howling winds had left a crane hanging from a high-rise and utilities deliberately darkened part of downtown Manhattan to avoid storm damage.

"It's really a complete ghost town now," said Stephen Weisbrot, from a powerless 10th-floor apartment in lower Manhattan.

Water lapped over the seawall in Battery Park City, flooding rail yards, subway tracks, tunnels and roads. Rescue workers floated bright orange rafts down flooded downtown streets, while police officers rolled slowly down the street with loudspeakers telling people to go home.

"Now it's really turning into something," said Brian Damianakes, taking shelter in an ATM vestibule and watching a trash can blow down the street in Battery Park before the storm surge.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the surge was expected to recede by midnight, after exceeding an original expectation of 11 feet.

"We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations," he said. "This is a once-in-a-long-time storm."

About 670,000 customers were without power late Monday in the city and suburban Westchester County.

"This will be one for the record books," said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operations at ConEdison. "This will be the largest storm-related outage in our history."

Because a customer is defined as an individual meter, the actual number of people affected is probably much higher.

It could be several days to a week before all residents who lost power during the storm get their lights back, Miksad said.

Shortly after the massive storm made landfall in southern New Jersey, Consolidated Edison cut power deliberately to about 6,500 customers in downtown Manhattan to avert further damage. Soon, huge swaths of the city went dark.

After a backup generator failed, New York University's Tisch Hospital began evacuating more than 200 patients to other facilities, including 20 babies from neonatal intensive care, some of them on respirators operating on battery power.

Without power, the hospital had no elevator service, meaning patients had to be carefully carried down staircases and outside into the weather. Gusts of wind blew their blankets as nurses held IVs and other equipment.

Late Monday, an explosion at a substation at 14th Street and FDR Drive contributed to the outages. No one was injured, and ConEd did not know whether the explosion was caused by flooding or by flying debris.

The underground power lines that deliver electricity to much of New York City are much less vulnerable to outages than overhead lines because they aren't exposed to wind and falling trees or branches. But when damaged, they are harder to repair because the equipment is more difficult to access.

If substations are flooded while in operation, the equipment will fail and need to be replaced. If they are shut down in advance, workers can more quickly power up the machinery and restore service after floodwaters have receded.

Earlier Monday, another 1 million customers lost power in New York City, the northern suburbs and coastal Long Island, where floodwaters swamped cars, downed trees and put neighborhoods under water.

The storm had only killed one New York City resident by Monday night, a man who died when a tree fell on his home in the Flushing section of Queens.

The rains and howling winds, some believed to reach more than 95 mph, left a crane hanging off a luxury high-rise in midtown Manhattan, causing the evacuation of hundreds from a posh hotel and other buildings. Inspectors were climbing 74 flights of stairs to examine the crane hanging from the $1.5 billion building.

The facade of a four-story Manhattan building in the Chelsea neighborhood crumbled and collapsed suddenly, leaving the lights, couches, cabinets and desks inside visible from the street. No one was hurt, although some of the falling debris hit a car.

On coastal Long Island, floodwaters swamped cars, downed trees and put neighborhoods under water as beachfronts and fishing villages bore the brunt of the storm. A police car was lost rescuing 14 people from the popular resort Fire Island.

The city shut all three of its airports, its subways, schools, stock exchanges, Broadway theaters and closed several bridges and tunnels throughout the day as the weather worsened.

On Tuesday, the New York Stock Exchange was to be closed again ? the first time it's been closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888, when a blizzard struck the city.

Earlier, some New Yorkers defiantly soldiered on, trying to salvage normal routines and refusing to evacuate, as the mayor ordered 375,000 in low-lying areas to do.

Tanja Stewart and her 7-year-old son, Finn, came from their home in Manhattan's TriBeCa neighborhood to admire the white caps on the Hudson, Finn wearing a pair of binoculars around his neck. "I really wanted to see some big waves," he said.

Keith Reilly posed in an Irish soccer jersey for a picture above the rising waters of New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

"This is not so bad right now," said the 25-year-old Reilly.

On Long Island, floodwaters had begun to deluge some low-lying towns. Cars floated along the streets of Long Beach and flooding consumed several blocks south of the bay, residents said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, holding a news conference on Long Island where the lights flickered and his mike went in and out, said most of the National Guards deployed to the New York City area would go to Long Island.

Anoush Vargas drove with her husband, Michael to the famed Jones Beach Monday morning, only to find it covered by water.

"We have no more beach. It's gone," she said, shaking her head as she watched the waves go under the boardwalk.

More from YourTango: 6 Money Matters To Discuss Before Marriage [EXPERT]

Contrary to what you might think, when it comes to relationships, more money does not equal more happiness.

It is important to look at the bigger picture. You may assume that if your budget, retirement plan and cash-flow worksheet are in order, you will have a happy relationship. However, this is not the case.

Your views on money impact every decision you make as a couple from the big stuff like houses and cars to the mundane details like the kind of coffee you drink and the brand of shoes you wear. But how does this affect our relationship? Here is an example: A husband calls his wife the "Money Nazi" because when he walks through the door, their conversation goes like this:

Wife: Where did you go out to lunch?
Husband: We went Italian today.
Wife: "What did you have?
Husband: "A Chicken Caesar Salad.
Wife: How much did it cost?
Husband: I don't know ? about 13 dollars.
Wife: Thirteen dollars for a chicken salad?!

If this argument sounds familiar, you aren't alone. Here are three culprits of financial tension in romantic relationships:

Work study positions go unfilled | HORIZON

By Henry Slater

There are opportunities available through Work Study for students to make some extra cash.

?Work Study doesn?t mean you get to study on the job,? said Jan Adams, a work study representative in the Financial Aid office. ?It means you get to help pay for your studies.?

Adams said that most students do not realize these positions exist because they don?t know what Work Study really is. ?Work Study is a grant that you can apply for,? she said. ?We subsidize the student?s employment through Financial Aid.?

?

Because so many students are misinformed, Adams said, the school has a shortage of Work Study employees.

The choices available ?can be pretty much anything from working in the copy center, to ceramics, to the library,? said student Ira Pradmore, 22, a Financial Aid front desk representative. ?Virtually anything on campus can be a potential work study job, and there are off campus positions available as well.?

?A lot of students do not know what Work Study is, and they don?t apply,? said Adams, ?which is why we still have a lot of money left over that we were hoping to have spent already.?

Work Study positions are only available to those who meet certain financial qualifications. ?You have to have applied for FAFSA, and have?eligibility that is determined through that FAFSA process,? said Pradmore.

?Whether or not you qualify is based on income,? said Adams. ?If you are over 25, or if you are under 25 and are independent, it is based on your income, not your parents? income.?

?Working in the school makes it a lot easier for me to balance going to school and having a job at the same time,? said student Jacob Lopez, 20, who works at the Student Life desk. ?I only started working yesterday, and I already feel very comfortable in my work and school environment.

??The people in the interview process were not intimidating at all,? said Lopez.? ?In fact, they were very welcoming, so the process of being hired was pretty easy going.?

Student Carol Ann Jaime, 56, explained her job as a circulations desk aid at the Whatcom Community College library. ?I mostly do customer service,? said Jaime. ?We call our customers patrons, because this is their library. I help them check in and out their books, and help them in reaching the right reference people if need be.?

Jaime described how her motivation for receiving her job at the library was a result of her passion for books, as well as her current situation in school. ?I?m just coming back to school after 32 years, and I wanted to finish out my AA degree as well as have a job, so I figured I would kill two birds with one stone by working for the library while I further my education.?

Not only does the Work Study program offer a wide variety of employment opportunities, but it offers a range of internship opportunities as well.

?By doing internships, students satisfy credits in a career relevant area, and often receive paying positions,? said Adams. ?I had a group of paralegal students get internships, and five of the six ended up in paying positions afterwards.?

Ultimately, Work Study aims to fiscally assist those who need it. ?We have students taking out $30,000 a year in loans on a community college budget,? said Adams. ?We?re trying to help students cut down on their loan amounts, which can be huge.?

FM may defer rollout of GAAR to FY15 | Firstpost

The Parthasarathi Shome committee today presented its final report on the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR), the controversial tax provisions aiming to target tax evaders, to Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

The Parthasarathi Shome committee today presented its final report on the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR),to Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

However, finance ministry sources told CNBC-TV18?that the government may defer the introduction of GAAR by another year to financial year 2015 in order to? provide a fillip to the investment sentiment in the country.

Through this year?s Finance Act, the government had proposed to introduce the anti-avoidance rules from April 2013. A deferment would need amendment to the Income Tax Act.

The panel has also suggested that? interest and penalty be waived if tax has been applied retrospectively. While presenting the draft report,? Shome? had advised that anti-tax avoidance measures such as GAAR should be used sparingly and not to raise revenue for the government.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram is? likely to announce? the final? decision on GAAR? on Thursday.

Fighter shows why you?re supposed to protect yourself at all times (VIDEO)

Sometimes, MMA fighters will try to make their fight exciting by dropping their hands and daring their opponent to hit them. UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva did it in his easy win over Stephan Bonnar, and Nick Diaz is quite well known for making this move.

To beg for a punch, a fighter should have confidence in his or her chin. He or she should be positive that this won't happen:

Yep, that's why the referees remind fighters to protect themselves at all times.

Thanks, With Leather.

NYC Marathon planning moves forward after Sandy

NEW YORK (AP) ? Five days before New York hosts its namesake marathon, its public transportation is shut down, its airports closed, its streets flooded and power out in many neighborhoods.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday he expected Sunday's race to go on as scheduled after superstorm Sandy. Marathon organizers were moving forward with their plans ? leaving open the possibility of changes from past years.

"The marathon has always been a special day for New Yorkers as a symbol of the vitality and resiliency of this city," New York Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg said in a statement.

"NYRR continues to move ahead with its planning and preparation. We will keep all options open with regard to making any accommodations and adjustments necessary to race day and race weekend events."

Bloomberg said it could be four or five days before the subways were running again. That could mean no trains on race day when the nearly 50,000 runners signed up need to get to the start.

The marathon pours an estimated $340 million into the city each year. But it also requires major support from city departments that are strained by the storm.

"The city is rightfully focused on assessment, restoration and recovery," Wittenberg said in the statement.

New York's airports could reopen as early as Wednesday, though cancellations earlier in the week could make it difficult for out-of-town runners to get on flights. Commuter trains and some river crossings that allow people to reach the city remained closed Tuesday, their timetables for reopening also uncertain.

Transporting all the runners to the starting line on Staten Island could be a major challenge, Wittenberg said Monday. About half of entrants take the ferry, which may still be closed because of flooding on both sides. Others take buses through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, also shut down because of flooding.

Nearly 20,000 amateur international runners need to get in the country. Family and friends of runners must somehow find a way to their viewing spots.

Wittenberg said Monday that NYRR had a long list of contingency plans already in place to deal with any obstacles that might arise. The 26.2-mile route through the five boroughs mostly avoids areas hit hardest by flooding.

Wittenberg had insisted Monday that "we have time on our side."

NYRR holds about 50 events a year and has dealt with issues ranging from heavy snow to lightning to security concerns in the past.

"We've been through close to it all," Wittenberg said.

Organizers expected to reschedule flights to get all the elite athletes to New York in time. Wittenberg hoped that most of the amateur international runners signed up would make it. The hours for number pickup will probably be extended for those who arrive late Saturday.

For runners who can't get to New York, the deadline to withdraw from the race and guarantee a spot in next year's event likely will be pushed back from Wednesday to Saturday. Under normal NYRR policy, entry fees won't be refunded, and runners would have to pay again next year.

The ceremonial finish-line painting scheduled for Wednesday was canceled, along with a news conference Tuesday.

A children's run Thursday was moved from Central Park to an indoor track, and the pavilion in the park has been taken down for the time being. Wittenberg said generators were in place in key locations to provide electricity.

Extra time is always built into planning, and 700 part-time workers and 8,000 volunteers ensure the course can be set up quickly.

"This is a very challenging time for the people and city of New York," Wittenberg said in the statement, promising updates on race week plans as more information is known.

Obama scraps Florida campaign event, returns to DC

President Barack Obama delivers pizzas to campaign volunteers in OrlandoORLANDO, Florida - President Barack Obama scrapped his planned campaign appearance here with Bill Clinton on Monday and planned to return to Washington to oversee the response to deadly Hurricane Sandy.

"Due to deteriorating weather conditions in the Washington area, the President will not attend today's campaign event in Orlando," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters. "The President will return to the White House to monitor the preparations for and early response to Hurricane Sandy."

Obama had flown down to Florida on Sunday, earlier than scheduled, in order to get ahead of the storm and attend the campaign rally. The show will go on, campaign aides said, including remarks by former Florida governor Charlie Crist and Democratic Senator Bill Nelson before Clinton speaks.

But with tens of millions of Americans in the path of the largest hurricane ever to churn through the Atlantic, and forced evacuations up and down the northeast seaboard, the president apparently judged that taking part in a political campaign event was non-optimal.

The president still officially planned to campaign in Wisconsin on Tuesday ? but that event seemed likely to be cancelled as well. He has already scrapped his participation in events in Virginia and Ohio ? both also to feature Clinton.

Obama has signed emergency declarations for Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington DC, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, freeing up federal dollars and materiel to help respond to Sandy.

Raining Cats And Blogs: What Exactly Is A Short Sale Listing?

During your search for foreclosure listings, you may have heard the term ?short sale". A short sale transaction is an alternative to foreclosure without many of the same damaging affects. A short sale is an agreement in which your mortgage lender agrees to accept a payoff on the loan for less than the balance. Many lenders agree to a short sale because they receive more of the loan balance in comparison to the amount they would gain from selling the property following a foreclosure.

The benefit of a short sale is that it aids in maintaining home values in the community the property is located. A short sale is also not a typical real estate transaction and includes more than the usual players. Most real estate transactions involve the home seller and their real estate agent, the buyer and their lender, and their real estate agent. In a short sale situation, all of those parties in addition to the seller's loan servicer, any junior lien holders, mortgage investors and/or insurers may be involved too.

If you would like to know more about short sales and how to buy a bank-owned or real estate owned property, please feel free to call us or contact us at www.SheilaNewtonTeam.com! Official: Iraq searches Syria-bound Iranian plane

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities forced an Iranian cargo plane heading to Syria to land for inspection in Baghdad to ensure it was not carrying weapons, an Iraqi official said Sunday.

It was the second such forced landing this month. The plane was released after the check.

The move appeared aimed at easing U.S. concerns that Iraq has become a route for shipments of Iranian military supplies that might could Syrian President Bashar Assad battle rebels in his country's civil war.

The head of the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, Nassir Bandar, said the inspection took place Saturday. The inspectors allowed the plane to continue its flight after they determined there were no weapons onboard, he said.

"Our experts found that the plane was carrying only medical supplies and foodstuffs," Bandar said, "so the flight was allowed to proceed."

Bandar said Iraqi authorities would continue searching planes suspected of transporting arms to Syria. Iraqi officials have repeatedly said they would not allow their country or airspace to be a corridor for arms shipments to either Syrian government forces or rebels.

Iraq ordered another Iranian cargo plane to land for inspection on Oct. 2. No weapons were found in that search, either.

Last month, Iraq banned a North Korea plane from crossing its airspace because of suspicions it was carrying weapons to Syria.

American officials have expressed concern that Iranian planes may be ferrying weapons over Iraq, and they have pressed Baghdad to take stronger action to ensure that no such transfers occur.

Also Sunday, police said three people were killed and eight others wounded when two bombs exploded near a market southeast of Baghdad.

Police said the simultaneous attacks Sunday morning took place in Madain, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of Baghdad, as shoppers started to arrive.

Medics in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters.

Sunday's blasts followed a string of attacks that killed 40 people in the Iraqi capital a day earlier, including evening explosions near a market and a bus station in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City.

Saturday was the deadliest day from attacks in nearly six weeks.

How to recover data from a dead or erased hard drive

3 hrs.

Q. I?have a hard drive with valuable information on it, but I can't seem to access it???the drive is either damaged or erased. Is there any way I can see what's on the drive and get it off??

Don't worry, we're not going to ask where you got the drive, but there are plenty of ways to examine it and see if any of the data is recoverable. With a little time, the right tools, and some care, you may be able to get some data off of that drive.

Step one: Assemble your tools and examine the drive's condition
The first thing to do is make sure you have the tools required to connect this drive to another computer safely. Ideally, you'll have some kind of SATA/IDE to USB cable or USB drive enclosure or sled that you can mount the drive into and connect it to your computer easily. Sure, if you have a desktop and like getting your hands dirty you can try to install the drive as an internal one, but an external connection is faster and easier.

Next, take a look at the drive itself. Is it damaged in any way? Are the pins bent or broken? Make sure that the drive is in good enough condition to actually use before you try anything in the first place that may damage it even further. If the drive is too physically damaged to attempt recovery, you may need more drastic measures that we'll get to later. If everything looks good and you have the equipment required to connect the drive to your system, we can proceed.

Step two: Grab some data recovery software and connect the drive
Before you do much else, make sure your antivirus and antimalware tools are up to date. You don't know what you'll find on this drive, and you don't want it to start misbehaving once the drive is connected to an active system. Once you've done that, it's time to download and install some data recovery tools. Here are a few we love:

Recuva (Windows, Free): Personally, Recuva has been indispensible. Made by the same folks behind CCleaner, Recuva makes data recovery simple and easy. if you're only interested in browsing and restoring selected files off of the drive, Recuva is a great option. Alternatively, check out Undelete Plus for Windows.

FileSalvage (OS X, $80): File Salvage for Mac will set you back some serious coin, but it's one of the best tools to pull data off of a connected hard drive in OS X. It can recover virtually any type of file on multiple partition types, and prides itself on its ability to recover from damaged drives and corrupt media. If you want an alternative, try Data Rescue for Mac ($100).

TestDisk (Win/OS X/Linux, Free): If you're not afraid of the command line, TestDisk is an open source utility that can run against almost any platform or partition type. It does a great job of recovering data quickly, and won't do unnecessary writes against the drive you're trying to recover from.

Bootable Linux distros for drive recovery: If you're not interested in messing around with apps (or paying for them), consider burning a bootable CD or USB key with BackTrack, Bart PE, or SpinRite on it, so you can boot to an OS that's not your primary drive, avoid writing or touching the drive you want to recover from, and run a host of recovery and forensics tools against that drive that are highly effective and completely free.?

A number of these tools can recover from formatted drives, especially if the data hasn't been overwritten. We've tackled this topic before, and used Knoppix as our bootable linux distro, but the steps apply to the ones we've mentioned as well. For more reading, check out this old but still largely accurate guide at Linux.com to recovering from formatted drives.

Remember, the less you work with the drive you want to recover data from, the better. As you read from the drive, you run the risk of exacerbating any damage it may have. The more you write to the drive, the more likely you are to overwrite something you want to recover. Bootable Linux distros??many of which have tools like TestDisk pre-installed (among other, more advanced tools)???are the best way to go if you're familiar with the method and if you're interested in recovering entire partitions, or making a non-bootable drive bootable again. If you're just looking for files and you know the drive was in a Windows system or a Mac, a stand-alone app is an easier way to go.

Step three: Get out the big guns (and your wallet)
Okay, so the drive is physically damaged, has been wiped and overwritten, or nothing else you try works and you really, really need the data off of it. You're even willing to pay a lot?for it. We're not going to ask why, but at this point it's time to call in the professionals.?

Pick up the phone and call the folks at DriveSavers and OnTrack to see what they can do for you. I've had good experiences with OnTrack. DriveSavers is well known and loved, both because they came to the rescue with free drive recovery services after September 11, 2001 and more recently helping Wired's Mat Honan recover from his epic hacking. Both companies do a superb job at pulling data even off of drives that have been formatted, overwritten, or even severely physically damaged. Keep in mind though that these services generally run in the thousand dollar-range, according to DriveSavers,?and higher.

If the drive is yours, or the data you get from the drive is valuable, we'd strongly suggest you make sure your data is backed up, both locally and online. After all, it's better to be able to get the data back quickly than have to jump through these hoops every time a drive fails. Remember, every hard drive will fail eventually, it's just a matter of time. Now go forth, use this knowledge for good, and recover!?

nullity auto: Not An Alternative Fish Story? ? bookseller16 ... - Gino ...

What exactly is fishing? I suppose it may be a sporting activity, a way to earn a living, although I am more of a mind to deem it to be a hobby as it is the ideal antidote for fighting any amount of stress.

Fish is an important food item which we cannot do without and we can always rely on working fishermen to keep the stocks plentiful. On the other hand, fishing is also a leisure interest and is one of the most popular hobbies.

The hobby of fishing continues to grow and there?s more money spent on it than arguably any other on account of the cost of buying a licence, fishing tackle, bait, clothes and transport etc. Often creating your own, obtaining second hand or borrowing it allows us to keep the costs down to a minimum.

Why is fishing a popular hobby? Just because it?s an excellent means of relieving stress and tension. It also helps anxious teenagers to adjust their way of thinking and form more constructive qualities, attitudes and activities.

You can find lots of family crafts and hobbies that could be taken on and enjoyed by one and all, this includes fishing.

Children in particular are keen to find out how to use bait in order to catch themselves a fish. Actually using and trying out each and every item of fishing gear in conjunction with a camping holiday may make them feel like characters in a Mark Twain novel.

It is necessary that we all realise the true worth of fishing as a recreational hobby, specially as it is just one of a few hobbies for men and women that they can both participate in and enjoy.

People of all ages enjoy fishing with their families or to take up many more family crafts and hobbies in order to alleviate the anxiety or boredom which lifestyles of today might bring about.

Fishing helps you to take in and enjoy all the benefits and beauties given to us by nature, such as rivers and riverbanks, birds and other animals. Fishing is a much preferred way to relax and take in the air.

Family together time has fallen considerably in recent years and for that matter so has the time spent interacting with the kids so any time set aside for family crafts and hobbies should help to restore a happy family environment.

Although there are many hobbies for men and women that you could do, chances are you can include the kids or your best friends in these pursuits too; it would be time well spent.

Catching the fish is the best feeling, regardless of if you catch them to cook and eat or just for the pleasure in catching them and releasing them again. The time we spend connecting with friends and family is well worth making the effort.

A great time can be had by all if you invest your leisure time wisely in family crafts and hobbies. The fun and learning experiences you acquire from such hobbies, like fishing, can make them family activities which will never be forgotten.

Fortunately, this has turned out not to be another fish story. However, if fishing as a hobby doesn?t float your boat then hopefully it will now motivate you to consider books on hobbies for men and women and the children too, to help find one that does.

Great Lentils Highlight of Cooking Weekend | Food and More with ...

Puy lentils (credit: Wikipedia)

Le Puy lentils (credit: Wikipedia)

We had some family in town this weekend, which made for good food times.? There were no projects, dinner parties or complicated recipes anywhere in sight. Instead, we stocked up at the Morningside Farmers Market and Whole Foods and then just hung out in the kitchen, chopping vegetables and drinking wine.

One dinner started with a bright salad of radicchio, Honeycrisp apples, toasted pecans and goat cheese in a rice wine vinaigrette, then we had some pan-roasted salmon with lentils. Not just any lentils but the mighty green le Puy lentils of France, which keep their beady integrity long past the time brown lentils turn to mush.

As the lentils cooked in chicken stock, I sauteed diced onion and sweet farmers market carrots with a sprig of thyme. I added a squeeze of double-concentrated Italian tomato paste (which comes in a tube and is available at Whole Foods) and let that sizzle and nearly brown before deglazing the pot with a hearty glug of red wine.

All this business went into the lentils, which were starting to taste complex and interesting. But they were missing something. D?oh. Bacon. I fried three strips of bacon until the just crisped and then tore them up into the lentils. Putting the bacon in at the end really did the trick. Its flavor served as a sweet-salty top note; the red wine played bass.

Then I noticed I had a pan full of bacon grease in which to roast the salmon and a most of a bottle of good, cheap petite sirah to serve with it.

Make these lentils:

RED WINE LENTILS WITH BACON

  • 1 1/2 cups le Puy lentils
  • about 5 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 large yellow onion, diced
  • 2 small carrots, diced
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon double-concentrate tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup good red wine
  • 3 strips bacon
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • Salt, pepper and olive oil as needed

Bring the lentils to a gentle boil in 4 cups of the chicken stock in an uncovered saucepan. Taste them as they soften, adding more stock if necessary. When done to your liking, cover and turn off heat.

Meanwhile, saute the onion and carrot in olive oil in another saucepan until onion is translucent. Add thyme and tomato paste and saute briefly until fragrant and starting to stick to the bottom of the pan. Stir in wine and loosen any bits adhering to pan. Pour this mixture into the lentils. Cook lentils over medium heat for 3-5 minutes to cook off any alcohol.

Fry bacon in large, ovenproof saute pan. When crisp, chop or tear and add to lentils. Add parsley and season to taste.

Use bacon pan to saute or roast salmon, pork chops, chicken thighs or tofu steaks.
