Divorces involving wealthy couples often turn out to be quite contentious. This should be noted by married couples in Columbus, Ohio, as it could one day be them if things do not go as planned. Take the example of the high-asset divorce between the CEO of NASCAR and his now ex-wife. The business of running NASCAR has likely made this man extremely rich and, possibly because of that, he has wanted to keep any court proceedings surrounding his divorce out of the public eye.
This man has married and divorced the same woman twice. On the first of two separate attempts, he went in front of a state Court of Appeals requesting that his court proceedings be closed to the public. That appeals court decided that the public interest was more important than the CEO's desire to keep the case secret. After that, a lower court judge acted against the decision of another lower court judge and opened the proceedings to the public.
Because of this dispute, he has returned to the same Court of Appeals to assert that one judge had no right to overturn the decision of another.
His desire for confidentiality extends to his divorce agreement, which was implemented in 2008. According to reports, he is in a dispute with his ex-wife in regards to whether she violated provisions from the agreement, including a confidentiality clause. In open court, an attorney for the CEO stated that the agreement included $10,000 per month for child support; $32,000 per month for alimony for 10 years and a payment of $9 million.
Five months after the divorce was finalized, the CEO went back to court to have the confidentiality clause enforced, seeking a closed court file that would include any future matters regarding his divorce dispute with his ex-wife. A media outlet challenged the attempt for secrecy because there would have been many legal implications should he have been allowed to have a sealed file.
