Washington hoops: Danish signee and alums win

Huskies2.jpgWashington coach Kevin McGuff announced another addition to the 2012-13 squad in Danish forward Mathilde Gilling. She's a 6-foot-3 native of Denmark who's being billed as a player who can help the Huskies with their depth in the post.

In McGuff's first season UW finished 20-14 anchored by senior posts Regina Rogers, Mollie Williams and Mackenzie Argens. With those players graduated and F Marjorie Heard transferring, the Huskies needed help inside beyond returnee Talia Walton and in-coming freshman Katie Collier.

"(Mathilde) brings a lot of basketball savvy and athleticism to the frontcourt" said McGuff, who spotted the 19-year-old during UW's European playing tour last August. "I was impressed when we saw her...and felt right away she'd be a positive fit in our system."

Gillings is currently playing in China for a Danish U-23 team. Her brother is a sophomore at Arizona State.

STILL BALLING: Some UW alums (and other area athletes) traveled to Hoopfest in Spokane in June.Team TBA, which included Lindsey Wilson, Amy (Taylor) Lefotu, Casey (Nash) Bunn and Breanne Watson defeated Team 3.5's Enjoli Izidor, Breanna Salley (Seattle University) and Syesha Thomas in the women's elite division. The final score was 20-18.

"(It was) a super physical and fun game to be apart of," wrote Watson in an email. "Great sportsmanship and a mutual respect for each others' game. What a battle!"

It's the third consecutive win for Team TBA at the event. Below is footage of the game.
