Win trip to Africa at 'superhero' race Saturday in Omaha

If you want a shot at climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa for free, you'll have to climb a few miniature mountains in Omaha first.

The Superhero 5.8K Run to Benefit CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is Saturday morning at Midtown Crossing in Omaha. All registered runners are entered into a drawing to win a free flight to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain is 19,341 feet or 5.8 kilometers high, so organizers decided the course distance would be 5.8 kilometers.

Race director John MacKenzie warned that the route is challenging and hilly. Runners will take Farnam Street to 42nd Street to Pacific Street and return to Midtown Crossing.

It's modeled after a climbing expedition, MacKenzie said, ?so it should be tough.?

The event raises awareness and funding for CASA, an organization that advocates for abused and neglected children in the foster care system until they find a permanent home.

?There's a big need, and CASA covers it,? MacKenzie said.

A former ?CASA kid? will also win a trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

?That's what we want, to let these kids know when they're going through this process that anything in their life is possible,? he said.

Runners are also encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero.

About 200 people are registered to participate. Online registration is closed. Sign up on race day at 7 a.m. for $20. There is also a one-mile fun run that welcomes kids. Click here for details.
